A Masterpiece of the Classic Mercedes-Benz Cabriolet Era – The 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet
Few Mercedes-Benz models embody the combination of engineering solidity, refined performance, and timeless elegance as convincingly as the W111 Cabriolet. When the open variants of the “Fintail” generation were introduced in the late 1950s, they ranked among the most sophisticated automobiles of their era. They combined the commanding presence of a large saloon with the craftsmanship of an extensively hand-built two-door motor car and the unique appeal of open-air touring.
While the four-door W111 saloons were replaced by the new W108 and W109 model series in the mid-1960s, the coupés and cabriolets remained in production. As a result, these elegant two-door models became a distinctive constant within the Mercedes-Benz range. They benefited from continuous technical development, while their fundamental design, shaped by Friedrich Geiger, retained its timeless elegance.
The pinnacle of this development arrived in September 1969 with the introduction of the 280 SE 3.5. Mercedes-Benz combined the classic W111 body with the newly developed M116 V8, creating a grand tourer that brought together traditional styling and modern powertrain technology. The 3,499 cc eight-cylinder engine produces 200 PS (197 hp) and is particularly distinguished by its exceptional smoothness and effortless power delivery. This refined character made the new V8 an ideal complement to the elegant coupé and cabriolet.
The 280 SE 3.5 also received a subtle visual evolution. Its lower and wider front end, featuring the so-called “low radiator” grille, gave the car a more contemporary appearance without sacrificing the characteristic proportions of the W111. The combination of a long bonnet, crisply defined side profile, and balanced overhangs retained the understated elegance that continues to distinguish the open Mercedes-Benz models of this series.
Beneath its elegant bodywork lies a sophisticated V8 whose character is defined less by dramatic bursts of performance than by effortless power and exceptional refinement. Paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, it creates an exceptionally harmonious grand tourer. Independent suspension, power-assisted steering, and disc brakes on all four wheels further underline the high technical standards Mercedes-Benz applied to its flagship models.
The 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet offered here dates from 1971, the final year of production for this particularly desirable W111 variant. Of particular note is its well-documented ownership history: the car has been in the possession of its current owner for more than 15 years. During this time, the cabriolet has been regularly serviced and all necessary maintenance work carried out on a continuous basis. This long-term ownership and careful treatment provide the Mercedes with a particularly compelling and trustworthy history.
With an indicated odometer reading of just 46,000 kilometres, the car presents as a particularly attractive example of this special W111 variant. The dark blue exterior combined with a matching dark blue leather interior gives the car a discreet yet exceptionally elegant appearance. This tone-on-tone colour combination harmonises beautifully with the restrained design language of the W111 and allows the numerous chrome details to stand out particularly effectively.
The specification also reflects the standards Mercedes-Benz applied to its flagship cabriolets. Air conditioning and electric windows underline the comfort-oriented character of the car and demonstrate that, even when new, this was far more than a conventional open sports car.
With just 1,232 examples produced, the V8-powered 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet remained a comparatively exclusive model. Production ended in 1971, bringing to a close more than a decade of W111/W112 coupé and cabriolet production. The 280 SE 3.5 therefore represents not only the technical pinnacle of the series, but also its elegant final chapter.
This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet brings together the defining characteristics of the final W111 generation in particularly harmonious fashion. Its low mileage, elegant dark blue colour combination, comfortable specification, long-term ownership history, and existing Swiss Veteran registration make it a particularly attractive example of this important model series.
