Beschreibung

Among the most celebrated of all postwar Mercedes-Benz models is the Paul Bracq-designed W111 series of 1962–1971. Rare, expensive, and largely hand built, they were the very definition of European sporting luxury. The Cabriolet offered here, finished in its incredible original colors, is among the very finest surviving examples. Sold new in Southern California, it remained there for nearly 45 years before being discovered in an original, intact state and then treated to a restoration more commonly reserved for million-dollar-plus automobiles.

Beginning in 2014, a restoration was performed to the highest level, including special attention paid to the undercarriage and engine bay. Showing approximately 66,000 miles at the time of cataloguing, the 280 SE’s interior features optional burled walnut veneers, and the consignor reports that the original leather was in such outstanding condition that it remains installed in the car, re-dyed in its original green color. European headlights were added as they so effectively complement the Cabriolet’s design, and countless rubber components and seals were replaced and painstakingly finessed to truly achieve a factory look and feel.

Taken all together, this remarkable 280 SE dazzles the senses. It represents an opportunity to experience one of these rare gems as was originally intended. Equally at home on the road or featured in any collection, this Mercedes-Benz is a showcase of the firm’s mastery of design and engineering, and its presentation is very likely without equal.
