The Mercedes-Benz G 36 AMG was among the earliest Affalterbach-bred G-wagen variants following the start of Mercedes-Benz and AMG's official collaboration in 1993. A special-order model that followed the extremely limited 500 GE 6.0 AMG, the G 36 AMG was fitted with the 3.6-liter "M104" inline-six out of the E36 and C36 AMG models but was mildly detuned for better low-end torque to better suit the Geländewagen's all-terrain identity. During the G 36's production run from 1994 to 1997, it is thought that only 120 examples were produced, and almost exclusively sold in the Japanese market.

This 1997 Mercedes-Benz G 36 AMG was ordered new in Japan as a left-hand drive example. The car is finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic with a Black leather interior adorned with Burl Walnut accents. It was ordered with a sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels, running boards, side-exit exhaust tips, and heated power-adjustable seats. It was lightly modified with a Blaupunkt stereo, aftermarket speakers, and aftermarket headlights styled after more contemporary G-wagens.

The CARFAX Vehicle History Report indicates that the car was imported into the United States from the Netherlands in September 2023. Once in the United States, this rare G 36 AMG received a service that included replacing the battery, spark plugs, muffler, valve cover gasket and front brake rotors. Additional work included refinishing the wheels and valve cover, and cleaning the engine bay with dry ice. Once complete, the G 36 was brought to Santa Barbara, California with its next caretaker later in October 2023.

Offered with 134,799 kilometers or approximately 83,670 miles at the time of cataloging, this G 36 AMG is an exceptionally rare and early example of the formula that helped refine the original utilitarian Geländewagen into an AMG-tuned luxury performance overlander.
