Prior to Mercedes-Benz acquiring AMG and bringing the Affalterbach-based company in-house, AMG was the ultimate automotive candy store for fans of high-performance Mercedes-Benz automobiles. AMG's engineers, who were mostly ex-Mercedes, created the performance cars of their dreams without restriction from executives and accountants. AMG offered clients a vast range of options from steering wheels or a trunk spoiler to a fully engineered car built to their high standards, complete with an AMG chassis number. The client's imagination and the size of their checkbook were the only limitations.

This 1989 300 CE-24 completed assembly as a well-optioned example destined for Japan. It was lavishly equipped with power adjustable, heated front seats with memory, air conditioning, electric sunroof, rear headrests, cruise control, and power windows in left-hand drive configuration. The car is believed to have covered approximately 1,300 kilometers before being taken to AMG Japan for cosmetic improvements, most notably the complete wide body upgrade. Both front and rear quarter panels were widened to house a staggered set of 17-inch AMG Aero III three-piece wheels. Complementing the widened fenders, AMG bumpers were fitted, with the front housing a set of fog lights, along with new side skirts. While the final exterior touch was the trunk spoiler, the AMG upgrades extended through the interior with new RECARO "Idealsitz C (81)" bucket seats, and white instrument faces with a 300 km/h AMG-branded speedometer framed by a smaller diameter red leather four-spoke AMG steering wheel.

The car remained in Japan until March 2023, when it was exported to the United Arab Emirates, where it was restored to its current condition by a marque specialist under the direction of the car's current owner. The work performed is said to include a refinish to its current color of Signal Red. The interior was fitted with new cream-colored Italian leather with red carpeting and accents.

Following the completion of the work, the car was imported to the United States in 2023. Currently, this AMG's odometer shows just over 50,000 kilometers or the equivalent of 31,000 miles at the time of cataloging and is believed to be original. With the ever-increasing appeal and rarity of pre-merger AMG cars, this unique 300 CE-24 AMG "Wide-Body" would be a show-stopping addition to any aficionado's collection of Youngtimer sports cars.
