From the moment the famous 300 SEL “Red Pig” fired its engine in anger at Spa-Francorchamps in 1971, tuning giant AMG and Stuttgart powerhouse Mercedes-Benz have worked hand-in-glove to create some of the world’s most fearsome sports and racing cars. The 2015 Mercedes-AMG GT represents just the second time engineers at Affalterbach were given free rein to create a car from scratch. Since then, AMG has run with the idea, incorporating knowledge gained from the GT3 and GT4 race programmes, fettling and refining the formula with increasingly visceral successive iterations that have transformed the GT from grand tourer into full-blooded supercar. Six years on, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series emerged as the purest, most powerful expression of that vision—a cutting-edge machine with Touring Car DNA that blurs the line between road and track.
Launched in 2021, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is a visually arresting ode to the art of aerodynamics that augments the elegant proportions of the GT with a host of improvements designed solely to increase performance. Styled in conjunction with Gustavo Estrada, the aerodynamicist who worked on the GT3 race programme, wind tunnel testing led to the design of a raft of cooling ducts, diffusers, splitters, wings and each element—crowned by a wild GT3-inspired two-tier rear wing matching the surface area of the racer’s—working in concert to ratchet up downforce, aid cooling, and improve handling and high-speed stability. As well as pushing the boundaries of performance, aerodynamic features serve as menacing styling cues, from slashed louvres atop each front wing to the gaping GT3-inspired radiator grille, and adjustable carbon-fibre front splitter.
Elsewhere, the Black Series features lightweight 10-spoke forged alloy wheels, four-wheel carbon-ceramic disk brakes and unique coil-over suspension utilising adjustable damping and a front-axle carbon torsion bar. But it’s what lurks beneath the taut, muscular bodywork that really sets the car apart: the most powerful AMG V-8 of all time.
The brand-new engine was designed exclusively for the top-of-the-range model. Re-worked around a flat-plane crankshaft instead of the GT R’s cross-plane unit, the “M178 LS2” engine’s revised firing order improved both thermal dynamics and throttle response, while larger twin-scroll turbochargers—boosted to 25 PSI—contribute to a monstrous power output of 730 horsepower and a torque rating of 590 lb ft. Transmitted to the rear wheels via a seven-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch transmission that is geared for acceleration rather than speed, the Black Series takes three seconds to reach 60 mph, doubling that speed just six second later. Providing you don’t run out of road—or nerve—the Black Series will hit a terminal velocity in excess of 200 mph.
Since order books opened in July 2020, Mercedes-AMG’s GT Black Series has flown out of showrooms at a rate commensurate with the model’s frightening pace. Around 1,700 examples were built since October 2020, of which this car is one, having been delivered new to Monaco in October 2021. Finished in the striking orange shade of AMG Magma Beam—a €7,599 option exclusive to the Black Series—the cabin is trimmed in a combination of black Nappa leather and complementary DINAMICA microfibre, with matching orange stitching throughout. This well-optioned machine benefits from the €7,800 AMG Track Package, which includes a titanium roll cage, four-point harnesses and a fire extinguisher, as well as being specified with a €5,000 high-end Burmester sound system and €1100 carbon door sills. The car is also equipped with a larger, 75-litre fuel tank, perfect for extended track sessions or high-speed cross-continental journeys—though having covered just 160 km at the time of cataloguing, its most significant journeys will be yours alone to enjoy.
Sought by the most discerning collectors from the moment order books opened, opportunities to own Mercedes-AMG’s fabled and much-anticipated GT Black Series are few and far between. Finished in a hugely desirable colour, specified with high-value options, and presented in as-new condition, this car represents a rare second chance to own a piece of Mercedes-Benz modern history.
