Born Tuesday, February 5th, 1963, 003255 is one of the “February Six”, referencing the last six cars to be built before the end of the 300SL production. Of these last six cars, 03255 is quite unique as it was special ordered in DB158 White Grey and not the DB50 of the other five cars. Accompanied by a DB190 Graphite Grey Hard Top and Black interior (the other five were all red), 003255 would stand out against the other last five cars. Along with the unique paint job and black interior, the first owner specially ordered 003255 with a factory radio delete (a proper Becker radio has since been added), special race seat belts (1 of approximately 7 sets provided from the factory with serial numbers), factory hardtop and full Hepco pigskin luggage.

The first owner, who’s name is unknown, would take delivery of 003255 in Paris in the spring of 1963. After a short two-year stint, actor Robert Horton would purchase the car and would be its continuous owner for the next 14 years. In 1979, Joseph Watson of Pennsylvania would discover 003255 in a used car lot in Paris. Mr. Watson purchased the car and had it shipped to the United States, where it would then change hands to Gordon Beck in 1985. Mr. Beck would become a long term caretaker for this car until his passing in 2006. In 2006 the car was purchased by Michael Hammer and John Reeves who restored the car in 2009 and sold the car in 2010. In 2010, Aaron Hsu took possession of the 003255 before eventually passing it along to its current owner in 2014.

Since 2014, 003255 has received consistent service and preventative maintenance through Paul Russell and Company. The current owner is a 300SL enthusiast that uses his cars and expects his cars to perform flawlessly. When it first arrived to us in 2014 it was determined that a full engine, transmission and rear end rebuild were in order. Both tasks were performed in house, along with a full service to the chassis and an engine bay detailing. Over the past seven years, we were expected to not only service what needed to be done, but go the extra mile and repair or replace anything we saw as a potential liability. Multiple 300SL Rally’s and Colorado Grands have proven the quality of 003255 and the care it has been given.

Paul Russell and Company is proud to offer such a rare and exquisite 300SL on behalf of our client. 003255 is one of the top 300SL Roadsters in the world, being one of only 26 built in 1963. 003255 retains its original alloy block engine. It is estimated that nearly half of the alloy blocks were replaced sometime throughout their life. The numbers matching engine, accompanied by its original hard top and original pig skin luggage, 003255 is the top tier for 300SL Roadsters.
The car is on location and is available for view by appointment only.
