Mercedes-Benz launched its first all-new postwar model, the W180 “Ponton,” in 1953. The example offered here is a wonderfully preserved and unrestored example from 1959, the final year of production for the 220 S Sedan. According to the build sheet accompanying its sale, this Ponton was built for the US market and equipped with sealed beam headlights, and finished in Black (DB 040) paint with red leather interior.

By 1966, the 220 S was in San Mateo, California, with a new owner who retained the Sedan for 19 years and compiled a dossier of service receipts that remain with the car. In 1985, the Mercedes-Benz was acquired by an owner based in New Hampshire. The next owner, a Virginia resident, acquired the Sedan in 2008 and commissioned an engine rebuild by marque specialist Keith Martin of Roanoke, Virginia. He continued to maintain the 220 S in original, unrestored condition, and it was named Best Original Car in September 2011 at the East Coast Ponton Congress in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The consignor acquired the Mercedes-Benz in 2017, and immediately carried out subtle, but much-needed improvements such as a sympathetic freshening of the interior wood, replicating the character of the finish and even the expected wear marks on the driver’s door veneer. In all, about $10,000 was spent correcting and repairing numerous small items including the clock, dash lights, and engine ancillaries. Importantly, in 2019, the 220 S was granted classification by FIVA and HVA as an A/1 Standard/Original example, documented by paperwork accompanying the car. Displaying less than 88,500 km (approximately 55,000 miles) from new, this wonderfully preserved 220 S awaits a caretaker who will continue to enjoy it on the road and present it at shows.
