Beschreibung

GENERAL

Presented here is one of only 84 Mercedes 220A Coupé’s built in 1955.

This example was rested by the previous owner over many, many years, with work progressing as time and finances allowed. The long process did eventually pay off, as the car is a true beauty to behold today, with many original details that are all restored very correctly indeed.

At the end of the restoration and after searching for several years, the owner was awarded by finally locating the matching luggage set that was made originally for this car. We're very proud to be offered the opportunity to bring to market this magnificently rare piece, ready to be cherished by the next connoisseur.

This could prove to be a unique opportunity for a true enthusiast, since the owner confided in us that he acquired the 220A coupe before the market value of these cars skyrocketed, and that he prefers the car to go to another enthusiast rather than an investor. He deliberately put the reserve on this car at half of the current market value to increase the chances of this happening. A rare opportunity not be missed indeed.
EXTERIOR

The beautiful black paintwork was professionally applied by a true artisan. All body panels and trim were removed before the bare metal respray.

Although parts are extremely hard to source for this model, this didn’t withhold the owner to get all the details exactly right in their original configuration.

The glass, chrome and bright ware look impeccable.
INTERIOR

The interior was reupholstered using the correct grain Mercedes leather.

The front and back seats were made to exact factory specifications. We are convinced that he upholsterer who made the interior of this car clearly had a great depth of knowledge of these cars.

The fit and finish of the wooden veneers and the built-in Becker Mexico radio really add to the wonderful period interior’s atmosphere.

The luggage area houses the spare wheel and tools neatly. The fitted luggage set is so pretty it would almost be a shame to drive with the boot lid closed.

ENGINE

The carbureted six-cylinder 220 engine is mated to a column shift manual transmission.

The engine starts fine and runs smoothly. The mechanical aspects of the car were also rebuilt but the car hasn’t been driven much lately, so it might be good practice to flush the older fuel and fluids before putting the car to hard use.

The engine bay is very clean and the original type plates are present.

BODY

The car’s undercarriage is very clean as can be seen on the images. New bushings, flexible hoses, brake lines and a new exhaust were fitted.

We didn’t find any anomalies and the seller informs us that the undercarriage doesn’t require any further attention.
PAPER TRAIL

The car comes with a valuation report for insurance purposes as well as German registration documents.
