"The 220 was Mercedes-Benz's bread and butter model, comprising the vast majority of cars manufactured, particularly for export, in the mid to late-1950s. First introduced in 1951, the 220 was comfortable, well-built and attractive. The W187-chassis Mercedes-Benz 220 was the first truly new model designed by Daimler after World War II. The 1950s was a strong period for Mercedes-Benz, as the marque renewed its reputation for creating luxury vehicles. The Cabriolet A was designed as an exclusive sporting vehicle, with a slightly raked windscreen and a folding third seat configured to make way for extra luggage. The classic styling belied a technically advanced vehicle; press attention focused on the uprated 2,195 cc engine which produced 80 bhp, making for a 90 mph top speed. When production ended in 1955, there was no direct successor, making this model unique in the company’s history.
This delightful Mercedes-Benz is finished in Elfenbein Ivory with Rojo leather interior and a black mohair hood. Delivered originally in Germany, this lefthand drive example has been subject to a comprehensive restoration over a three year period. Since this work was completed, she has been used very little having been in a private collection. Marque specialist Andrew Brodie Engineering in December 2018 carried out some recommissioning at a cost of £4,371.20 and she is now ready to be enjoyed immediately. Now UK registered, this fine looking 220A Cabriolet is supplied with the original sales brochure, owners handbooks and a homologation certificate supplied by Mercedes-Benz. This super stylish iconic car from the 50s appears to offer excellent value given the prices achieved recently for similar examples."
