The Mercedes 280 SE cabriolets and Coupéés were the first sporting models of the marque to be given a V8 engine. The combination of a superb performance with elegant styling made these 3.5-litre cars highly desirable. They used the same platform and bodies as the 6-cylinder models, but were more luxurious. An abundance of leather in the passenger compartment was standard, as was a greater use of wood trim. These cars were produced in limited numbers, with just 4,502 examples built featuring more cabriolets than Coupéés. The 3.5-litre V8 engine was a very modern design and the 1970s class 5 engines had an electronic injection system and transistorized ignition. The performances were impressive with a top speed of 205 km/h and 0 to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds.

This 280 SE Cabriolet was purchased new by Mr. Seymour Milstein of Scarsdale, in the state of New York, USA. He personally went to take possession of his car at the Mercedes plant in Sindelfinden, in spring 1970. He decided to equip his car with all the most desirable and sought after options: automatic floor shifter, air-conditioning, four electric windows, Becker radio, two center console armrests, interior in black leather. It was sold in 1991 to its second owner who imported the car into Austria. He sold it two years later to a friend with 31,300 miles on the clock. It displays today 36,000, the owner drove only 4,700 miles in 23 years.
The car is in a superb original condition, as it had received regular maintenance and has not experienced any major restoration, as it has been very well preserved. The air-conditioning system was charged recently and is working perfectly. The black leather of the interior has a sublime patina. It was repainted in 2015 to its original color, with the body laid bare, and the seals were replaced. The car also received a new stainless steel exhaust system. Since then, the car has hardly been driven. Having spent time in the hands of owners who were most concerned about maintaining the car properly, this Mercedes drives beautifully and comes in a state in which the enthusiasts of the brand will really appreciate.
