W201 is the design code for a medium-high-end sedan produced by the German Mercedes-Benz between October 1982 and 1993 and sold under the trade name of 190.

The 190 is an extraordinarily important model in the history of the Stuttgart house, in three aspects in particular: the line, designed by Bruno Sacco (head of the Mercedes Style Center since 1975) and which will influence all subsequent production of the brand; the innovative rear suspension scheme, called multilink and destined to become a reference for automotive technology; finally, the entry of Mercedes-Benz into a segment of the market that is lower than the usual one.

The Mercedes 190 was produced in four high-performance versions, desired by the German company to introduce this model in the Touring championships. The road versions were used to obtain homologation in these championships and therefore to be able to enter the cars themselves. The 190 employees in the race obtained in most cases only good final placings, but towards the end of the 190’s career there were also significant affirmations that raised the interest of the public. A brief description is provided below for each of these models.

This model was the first to be introduced by the House of the three-pointed star. It was presented to the general public at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show, in autumn, but already a few months earlier, in the summer, it had already been previewed to the press on the Nardò (LE) circuit, where three pre-series specimens set significant records. speed, traveling at an average of 247.939 km / h.

The main reason of interest of the 190 E 2.3-16 is the engine, whose monobloc derives from the 2-liter standard production; with reworked cylinders and head reworked by the British Cosworth, which included, among other things, a double camshaft and four valves per cylinder, the maximum power reached 185 HP at 6200 rpm, a remarkable value for an engine born in 1983.
