While the M1 series cars formed the basis of a line of CanAm contenders, the M6A that followed represented the real cornerstone of McLaren’s Transatlantic successes. A completely new design – initiated in response to Lola’s domination of the inaugural CanAm Challenge Cup in 1966, for whom John Surtees took the title – by future March co-founder Robin Herd, the M6A was also the world’s first purpose-built CanAm device.

In place of the usual spaceframe chassis, the new car boasted McLaren’s first monocoque. Using what were then advanced techniques, it comprised aluminium and magnesium panels bonded together via epoxy resin and aircraft standard rivets, and cleverly incorporated three fuel bags – one in each side section and another in a cavity beneath the driver’s legs – totaling 54 ga
