How great is this? When did you last clap eyes on a Maserati Khamsin? Do you know the model? Well, the Maserati Khamsin is the ultimate 70’s Grand Tourer and was Maserati’s idea of a car for transcontinental European travel at speed. This specific 1974 example has only clocked up 28,745 km and is in very good shape. Let’s start by explaining why and how this model came into being. In 1972 Studio Bertone received its first ever order to develop a Maserati. The Khamsin was exhibited to the public at the 1972 Turin Auto Show as a concept car on Bertone’s stand. It was well received and in March 1973 the production car took prize of place on the Maserati stand at the Paris Motor Show. It was presented as the successor to the Maserati Ghibli. Maserati also had the Bora in its range, that many clients saw more as a sports car rather than a Grand tourer because of its mid-engine position behind the front seats. In the Khamsin that problem was solved by a more conventionally placed front engine. To top it all the Khamsin was also a 2+2 with, for its size, a considerably sized boot. Although the Khamsin should have been a runaway success, eventually only 435 were sold due to the effects of the 1973 oil crisis. The car you see before you is the show car of the Turin Auto Show in 1974. If you happen to have seen pictures of the car back then, you may not have immediately recognised it. The Khamsin has had a complete makeover after being fully restored and re-sprayed in the “Fuoco” red

finish she has today. The accompanying Maserati certificate shows the car initially had a "Celeste Chiaro" exterior and a "Senape" Conolly” leather interior trim. Already a stunning car to behold the sporty red colour show off the Khamsin’s sporty lines just that little bit than the light blue finish. The lovely bodywork is in great shape with straight and correctly aligned panelwork. The chrome brightwork is in fine condition. The leather clad interior is also in great shape. The leather has been very well preserved and is lovely and supple. The black carpets also look great. The dashboard top is clad in black alcantara, preventing nuisance window glare whilst driving. The car has always been very well maintained and as a consequence drives a treat. Recently new brakes and suspension rubbers have been fitted and the shock breakers have been refurbished. The engine runs fantastically and has ample power over the whole range. The engine is coupled to a manual ZF gearbox delivering well-known precision and fine gear ratios. Thanks to the recent work carried out to the brakes and suspension amongst others this Grand Tourer has impeccable roadholding manners. The car comes with an extensive documentation file including the earlier mentioned Maserati certificate, the original owner’s manual, a workshop manual, an original brochure and lots of correspondence relating to the car going back to 1975! This is without doubt a gorgeous Maserati Khamsin with a fetching finish and in good condition. Gallery Aaldering is Europe’s leading Classic Cars specialist since 1975!
