Production of the Ghibli began with a fastback coupe in April of 1967, joined by a spider or convertible variant in 1969. The Ghibli was powered by a 4,719 cc V8 engine with dry-sump lubrication and chain-driven camshafts that was enlarged to 4,930 cc of displacement in 1970. The Ghibli was capable of accelerating to 60 miles per hour in fewer than seven seconds, en route to top speeds approaching 160 miles per hour.
