Model history

The Maserati 3500 GT, designed by Touring (1957-1964), was the first Maserati with economic succes. In the beginning of the sixties the 3500 GT was faced with increasingly concurrence mainly by Aston Martin’s DB4. Therefore the new Maserati 3500 GTi S was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1962. The ’S’ stands for 'Sebring', the famous racetrack where Juan Manuel Fangio and Jean Behra had triumphed in 1957 at the 12 Hours race behind the wheel of a Maserati 450S, followed in second place by Stirling Moss and Harry Schell in a Maserati 300S.

The 3500 GTi S was 2+2 coupé designed by Vignale and entered production the following year alongside the regular 3500 GT with a number of small aesthetic modifications. The short chassis of the 3500 GTi S was similar to that of the 3500 GT Spyder, at 2.5 meters long. It was not until 1964 that the car was officially renamed to ‘Sebring’, in honor of this double victory.

Lucas direct fuel injection was fitted as standard, denoted by the model’s 3500 GTi S title. Sportier than the 3500 GT, the Sebring was intended as an occasional 2+2 seater with a simple bench seat in the rear.

Between 1962 and 1966 the car was fitted with a 3.5 litre engine with 235 hp, generating speeds in excess of 145mph. Disc brakes came as standard whereas an automatic gearbox was an option. With the introduction of the 3.7 litre in 1965 power increased to 245hp. After 1968 the Sebring could be ordered with a 4.0 liter engine with 255 hp.

Two separate series of the Maserati Sebring were produced. The series 1 and series 2.

Production estimates vary, depending upon the source, but it is believed that between 1962 and 1969 no more than 446 Sebring Coupés were built, with 348 being Series I Tipo AM101/Ses and 98 being Series II Tipo AM101/10s.

We are pleased to offer this spectacular series 2 ’Sebring’ on behalf of its owner. According to the historical information, the original matching numbers rare 3692 ccm engine is fitted. The car was original finished in Blue Sera metalizzato with a Senape (mustard) Connolly leather interior.

She was delivered through Roma Automobili on 2 July 1968 to a wealthy Milanese gentlemen named Mr. Saxida. Mr. Saxida kept the car until 1976.

In 1997 the car was exported to the Netherlands and was beautifully ground up restored by well known specialists in the period 1998-2001. The restoration is fully documented from day one with pictures and invoices, totaling 275.000 Hfl. In 2008 she got a new Dutch owner and in 2012 the car was acquired via VSOC for a Swiss collector who attended several rallies and Concours d’Elegances with this car. Again a mechanical overhaul was performed in 2014 in Basel, Switzerland. In 2017, we acquired this outstanding Maserati for its current Dutch owner.

The short wheelbase Maserati ‘Sebring’ designed by Vignale perfectly defines a gentlemen’s sportscar from the sixties, especially when finished in its original colour of ‘’Blu Sera’’ with a red leather interior. The strong 6-cilinder twin plug engine with twin overhead camshafts runs very well. Handling is excellent and the gearbox is a delight. The car is fitted with Lucas fuel injection, which gives an unbelievable impact of performance and enjoyment compared to the carburetor version of the 3500 GT. This car has been fitted with airconditioning for more comfort in the summer.

We have a very extensive history file with documentation and photos of its restoration. You are welcome in Sassenheim to see these documents including a FIVA pasport, Certificato d’Origine Maserati S.P.A and of course the Maserati itself. Ground up restoration 19 years ago and still presenting very very well.

Total recorded mileage is 73.150 km on clock and only 8.000 km since mechanical overhaul in 2014 (31.000 SFr). The car is Dutch (EEC) registered with APK (MOT/TUV/CT).
