Beschreibung
Registration number: DE-84-09
A car that blends military precision with Italian flair? This 1960 Maserati 3500 GT was originally delivered to a U.S. Navy Captain. It is a full matching numbers and matching colors example, finished in the rare and stunning Verde Lancia with Marrone Connolly leather inside. That color combination alone tells you everything: style, class and a touch of bravado.
*Fully Restored and Rebuilt*
This 3500 GT underwent a complete restoration by a renowned company in Maranello, right in the heart of Ferrari country. That alone is worth a knowing smile. The restoration is documented in a beautifully bound photo book, and the work was carried out to an exceptional standard, certified by Maserati Classiche. This is not just a polished-up classic. This is a Maserati restored with expertise and backed by provenance.
*The History of the Maserati 3500 GT*
Let’s take a step back in time to 1957. Maserati was at the height of its racing glory. Fangio had just clinched his fifth world championship in the 250F, their works cars were winning everywhere, but the finances were running dry. The company decided to pull out of racing and pivot toward something entirely new: luxury road cars for discerning drivers. The 3500 GT was the first major product of this new strategy.
It quickly earned the reputation of being the gentleman racer among Italian classics. It was Maserati’s first mass-produced grand tourer, a 2+2 with a tubular chassis, independent front suspension, and a live rear axle. On paper, that sounds very traditional, and it is. But on the road, the car feels wonderfully balanced, largely thanks to what lies under that long hood: the superb 3.5-liter straight-six derived from the 250F Formula One engine. Initially fed by three Weber carburetors, producing around 220 horsepower, later versions featured fuel injection and up to 235. But numbers aside, this engine has soul. It’s a gem.
Stylistically, it was penned by Carrozzeria Touring, which means clean, understated, and distinctly early 1960s. Not loud or flashy, but confident. A car that doesn’t need to prove itself, because it already does.
And the example at Gallery Aaldering? It stands as if ready to debut at the Geneva Motor Show, just sixty years later. Everything is right. The lines, the details, the scent of leather, and once in motion, the Maserati responds with poise, exactly as it should.
The paintwork is in excellent condition, and the chrome elements like the bumpers are stunning and correct. Inside, the quality of the restoration is immediately clear: the leather is beautifully finished, the carpets are first-rate, and the trim details are as accurate as the day this Maserati left the showroom in 1960.
