Beschreibung
March engineering was founded in 1969 by Max Mosley, Alan Rees, Graham Coaker und Robin Herd in Bicester. In the 20 years following the company produced competition cars for a large variety of motor sport classes including single seaters for the Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3, Formula 3000 and the American Indy cars. In addition, prototypes for the sports car world championship (24 hours Le Mans) and the IMSA and CanAm series were produced. At times March was the most successful and the most versatile racing car constructor. The March 742 offered with the chassis #29, one of 30 examples built, was completed for the Formula 2 season of 1974 and driven by the French drivers Maublanc - Dufust - Besnard – Galbrun. Jacques Galbrun kept his racer also in the following years but eventually replaced the original BMW M12/7 engine by a slightly less expensive 1.6 litre Ford BDA in Formula Atlantic specification and then used the car at different events until 1999. Then the single seater was sold to Germany from where, in February 2006, it was imported by a racing car enthusiast into Switzerland. Shortly after, he had his March overhauled and repainted. In 2008 he decided to replace the engine with a newly built 2 litre Ford BDG as used in the 1974 Formula 2 championship in some cars. The new engine delivered 267 horsepower, turning the little monoposto into quite a competitive proposition indeed! Since its completion the March 742 has not been used in anger and has spent most of its time in a private museum. The Formula 2 is well documented and presents itself in good to very good condition and thanks to its FIA HTP period HR, class 2/5 documents, valid until 31st December 2031, may be entered in competition immediately. Because of the extended period of inactivity, a major service should be performed. The engine however has regularly been turned through and with little effort the car may be used again. Before any competitive outing the tyres, the seatbelts and the fire extinguisher must certainly be replaced.
