Conceived in the years of postwar austerity as light utility transport for the farm and the smallholding, the Land Rover borrowed its philosophy from the wartime Jeep and its mechanical hardware from the Rover P3 saloon. Steel rationing dictated aluminum alloy body panels, reinforced with galvanized steel cappings and set upon a heavy box-section ladder frame that gave the car formidable strength. Selectable four-wheel drive and a low-range transfer case completed a package intended to work anywhere, in any conditions, and to keep working long after more sophisticated machinery had failed. That reputation for near-indestructibility, together with the honest simplicity of the earliest 80-inch cars, has made the original Series I among the most sought-after of all Land Rovers.

This Series 1, chassis number 26630208, is an early 80-inch example built as a complete knock-down (CKD) kit at Solihull and dispatched on 19 December 1951 to Société Nouvelle Minerva of Antwerp, where it was assembled for the Belgian market. Its British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate confirms its left-hand-drive, export CKD specification, and the car is understood to have been supplied to the Belgian Rijkswacht-the national gendarmerie that policed the country until its 2001 merger into the integrated federal and local police. It retains a Rover four-cylinder engine of the correct type, serial number 26130348, driving through the four-speed gearbox and transfer case.

When it was discovered by the vendor, the car was in very original condition and still wearing its Police spec. The car has subsequently been the subject of a professional and documented, nut-and-bolt restoration to the highest standards with invoices totaling close to €100.000. Finished in RAF Grey over a sand canvas interior and top, and having covered only 1,675 km since its rebirth, it presents throughout in excellent order, from the restored chassis and rebuilt drivetrain to the correct Firestone tires and matching spare. Accompanied by its BMIHT Certificate and a 2024 appraisal report, it is a head-turner of the model that motivated the postwar European countryside.
