In 1966, Land Rover’s designers began work on a new two-door concept known as the “Velar”. Their goal was to create a vehicle with the same off-road abilities as the Land Rover, but with improved comfort and on-road performance. English and avant-garde, the Range Rover has become a legend over the years, with its stunning looks, comfort, impressive load capacity and above all its huge snob appeal! A pioneer in its category, it had what it took and achieved tremendous success with a well-heeled and unconventional clientele who were looking for a ‘Swiss army knife on wheels’. It is no longer unique but remains to this day the benchmark in the luxury 4WD market segment. Introduced to the market in 1970, the Range Rover Classic was produced for 26 years before making way for the more modern P38. The model celebrated its half-century in 2020, but at Rétromobile three years earlier Land Rover presented its “Range Rover Reborn” programme, which enabled diehard fans of the marque to acquire an original model restored by the factory.

This rare Range Rover Classic is what is known as a “Suffix A” model, i.e. from the first series built before 1973. It was delivered new at Argenteuil by British Leyland France in July 1972. Before being acquired by its current owner, it had four previous owners, in Paris, Lyon and then Normandy. It has therefore always remained in France. In 2016, its latest owner decided to have the vehicle completely restored, meticulously respecting its original specification. The well-known specialist Only Land, at Bourg-en-Bresse, was entrusted with giving the Range Rover a new lease of life. Although the car was in running order and a sound base from which to start, it took Only Land’s workshops 18 months’ work to reach the high standard the owner wanted. Everything was stripped down and removed before being reassembled: the body, chassis, gearbox, transfer box and axles ... Each stage in the restoration was scrupulously respected and documented in a comprehensive photographic record. The Range Rover was thus restored to its original “Tuscan Blue” finish and its engine rebuilt as new. Since the completion of the work, the Range Rover and its owner have racked up appearances in magazines and on TV, notably in February 2020 in the programme Direct Auto on C8, and on the cover of last month’s issue of the magazine Rétroviseur, which devoted a feature to the Range Rover’s 50th anniversary. It is undoubtedly the best-known Range Rover Classic in France, in perfect mechanical order and immaculate overall condition.
