The 2002 Land Rover Discovery TD5 'S' represents the entry-to-mid level trim of the post-facelift Discovery Series II, built during the era of Ford's ownership. Benefiting from the late 2002 mid-cycle refresh, this specific model year introduced improved build quality and Range Rover-inspired styling revisions. Positioned above the base 'E' model but below the luxury 'GS' and 'ES' trims, 'S'-spec cars balanced utilitarian roots with essential road comforts. They were normally configured as a 5-seater though many were upgraded to a 7-seat layout with fold-away rearmost seats and were well equipped as standard with electronic driver aids including Hill Descent Control (HDC), Electronic Traction Control (ETC), and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD).
Motivation is naturally provided by Land Rover's ubiquitous 2.5-litre (2,498 cc) in-line 5-cylinder TD5 turbodiesel offering 137bhp and 221lb-ft of torque through a five-speed manual gearbox to all four wheels via a dual-range transfer box.
Finished in Epsom Green Metallic with 'Evolution' Smokestone Grey cloth trim, this 2002 Discovery TD5 'S' has only covered a remarkable 256 miles and, although obviously not new, in many respects it's effectively a brand-new vehicle. Supplied new by Land Rover Dealer Charles Douglas of Middleton-on-the-Wolds to its one and only farmer owner, it never left his barn until 2025.
Fitted with front seat covers, the interior is as new and has never seen any product to detract from its ex-showroom condition, perhaps testament to its pitch dark, bone dry storage. Dealer mats were fitted from new and we suspect the rear seats and additional seven-seat option have never been sat on.
The engine bay is commensurate with virtually no usage with all the plastic fluid reservoirs free from discolouration and present as per day one. The OE fit Michelin 4X4 tyres are still as new and the fitted commercial tow bar has never been connected. As can be seen from our images, the rest of the Defender presents very well with the exception of a few storage marks.
It's supplied with the owner’s manual book pack, two keys with Charles Douglas dealer fobs, previous MOTs back to 2016 and the original V5C showing no previous owners. The Cherished Registration Number, S5 FPR, was transferred by the original owner in June 2003, it's his initials, and will remain with the vehicle (original registration YX02 XER).
Surely a must for any Land Rover collector looking to plug a gap in the line-up and, we suspect, unrepeatable.
