The original Land Rover series began production in Solihull in 1948 and until its decades-long production run ended in 2016, more than two million Defenders were produced, becoming a British automotive icon. Since production ceased, the revered model has been in increased demand from both collectors and those willing to use this tough, utilitarian vehicle in the way it was designed for. It was only in 1989, following the introduction of the all-new Land Rover Discovery, that the Defender received its own name. This was not only a marketing exercise; the new Defender received a raft of upgrades, along with a new turbo diesel engine, which brought useful increases in power, torque, and fuel economy when compared with the old, normally aspirated diesel it was based on. Often boasting large 'Defender' logos, the Land Rover went through a continuous process of development, gaining disc brakes and power-assisted steering as standard during the 1990s, together with a host of other improvements.
This very good 1988 Land Rover Defender 90 V8 is supplied with a very good history file which goes back with invoices from the early 1990's. Extensive work has been carried out to this Land Rover starting in 2002 with an external roll cage fitted. In 2007 it was taken to Scorpion Racing Ltd on the North Circular Road where the suspension was raised and uprated also at this time they supplied and fitted a hard top, a front winch bumper with a Superwinch X9 and a rear Superwinch X9. In December 2011 the engine was checked for excess exhaust smoke. In January 2012 a TVR Griffith engine was acquired, checked and fitted with the odometer reading 117,811 miles, also fitted was a new clutch assembly and new alloy radiator. Since the engine was fitted this Land Rover has only covered 6,000 miles. Finished in blue with black bucket seats, this Land Rover Defender is supplied with a V5 registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in July 2025 and a large file containing the original service book, old MoT certificate, invoices and the Venus CB transceiver manual. The current owner describes this vehicle as a beast and can tow anything.Consigned by John Tomlin.
