The Lancia Fulvia ( Tipo 818 ), produced from 1963 through 1976 , was first delivered as a 4-door Berlina. The Coupe as well as the Sport followed in 1965. During its entire life span a wide variety of Fulvia's were built with even a bigger number of engine variations.
The Fulvia Coupe was seen as a contender for the Alfa Romeo GT Junior as both had competition intentions. Due to its success in the motorsport arena and mass production of 141.724 units, the Coupe might have overshadowed the Sport , but the Sport was definitely the winner in design. The Sport , a fast back 2 seater , was based on the platform and mechanics of the Coupe and built for Lancia by Zagato where it was created by their chief stylist Ercole Spada . More aerodynamic and sportier than the Coupe, the Sport was built for performance on the road instead of rallying.
Based on the Coupe , Series I and Series II, the Sport followed automatically their technical evolution. The face lifted Coupes and Sports, Series II, were launched at the Turin Motor Show in 1970. Changes for both included a new 5 speed gearbox and an upgraded brake system using larger Girling calipers with servo in place of the Dunlop brakes.
The Sport Series II 1,3 S by Zagato , became a 2+2 and was now made of steel welded to the monocoque for more rigidity . Additional changes included modified suspension and ride height, new front lights , larger bullet shaped taillights , mirrors moved from the wings to the doors, stamped steel wheels without hub caps and wider tires. The bonnet now front hinged instead of side hinged and the separated spare wheel compartment was deleted . Some earlier Sports S II's though had overlapping features with the outgoing Series I. The typical narrow angled V shaped 4 cylinder Lancia engine however , was not the one of the Series II but was the same 1,3 L out of the Coupe Rallye Series I ( type 818.303 ) producing a 92 HP, giving the car a performance beyond expectations.
The elegance of the Fulvia Sport , combined with Lancia's high-end engineering and built quality, made it a true Italian beauty , maybe not in the traditional sense but certainly in terms of character and automotive soul. The charming but high priced Lancia Sport won the hearts of many car aficionados : a total of 3.901 Series I were produced plus 3.399 Series II , of which 2.599 were 1.3 S . Financial issues were at the base of the transfer of ownership to Fiat in 1969 and Lancia was forced to downgrade their high end specification for future models. The Fulvia and even more so the Sports model was the last real Lancia of its history.
This car , built in 1971, in the very chic combination of off-white with brown leather interior , is one of the Series II having all the upgrades. It was first sold in Germany but not much more history could be found. When discovered by a Lancia collector and restorer in 2017, it was complete and original, albeit in a rather bad state. Fully in love with his Fulvia Sport , the new owner commanded a total nut and bolt restoration where almost all, if not all, other owners / collectors have to opt for a more sympathetic approach as dictated by market value. As you can expect from a passionate car lover , the result is absolutely stunning in every single aspect, with perfect lines of the hatch back Zagato body , soft white finish , cosy dash and an inviting interior , all to original specifications. Looking at it now , one could wonder how it is possible that a little gem, like the Fulvia Sport, has gone unnoticed for so many years .
The car has barely 1400km since the restoration was finished at the end of 2019 and is now fully ready to enjoy. It has German papers,a toolkit and it comes with a detailed restoration photo book.
