The Lamborghini Diablo first appeared on 21 January 1990 as a long-overdue replacement for the Countach, which had been on sale in various guises since 1974. Marcello Gandini's design language of a wedge shape and cabin-forward design was carried over to the Diablo, but it was considerably refined and made less angular by Chrysler both in the pursuit of aerodynamic performance and to increase its appeal to a wider contemporary audience. Power came from a 5.7-liter, fuel-injected version of the evergreen Giotto Bizzarrini V-12 engine, capable of 485 horsepower, which unlocked a top speed on the interesting side of 200 mph. Lamborghini’s new model also introduced creature comforts such as air conditioning and power windows and mirrors—though the steering remained unassisted.

This attractive Nero over Cuoio example is the 362nd of 401 Diablos produced by Lamborghini in 1991, with just under 900 examples “first-generation” cars produced between 1990 and 1998. Delivered new to Auto Palace of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, this Diablo was first road registered in January 1992. Interestingly, early Nero examples such as this one offered here were supplied by Lamborghini with side mirrors clad in a gray paint. While many owners elect to have the mirrors painted, this Diablo evidently retains this original and distinctive detail.

The car was retained by its original owner until his passing in 2016 and sold shortly thereafter by his estate to a broker. It was acquired hence by the consignor in late 2018.

In May 2019, this Diablo received a thorough mechanical servicing executed by DriverSource of Houston, Texas at a cost of over $20,000 USD. The range of addressed items include the fitment of new door struts, transmission mounts, spark plugs, injectors, head gaskets, v-belts, and distributor cap. Additional line items of note include an oil change, fluid flush, A/C recharge, alternator rebuild, and four new Pirelli tires of the correct OEM specifications. This Diablo’s odometer drive gear was also replaced at this time, with DriverSource technicians noting that the odometer displayed 12,859 kilometers; however, the total mileage is unknown. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/az21.
