Throughout the late Twenties and early Thirties Lagonda gained a fine reputation for their 2 and 3 litre sports tourers and, for the 1934 season, a gutsy 4 1/2 litre high performance model joined the line-up. Lagonda was also the only manufacturer ever to win the Le Mans 24 Hour race while technically bankrupt in June 1935.
Many considered Lagonda near rivals to Bentley anyway, so it was natural that WO Bentley should join the new Lagonda management on release from his contract with Rolls-Royce. The LG45 was the first model that WO had a hand in, turning to tuning wizard Harry Weslake to derive more power and finesse from the Meadows engine. This was done in stages and as and when the money was available and sanctioned b
