There is nothing more tempting—or more challenging—for the idle industrialist than attempting to create one’s own supercar. For every Ferruccio Lamborghini there are a dozen John DeLoreans, the path to greatness paved with good intentions and littered with overbudget and inherently flawed projects. Christian von Koenigsegg is one of the rare breed from the first camp, and after founding his company in 1994 had, three years later, unveiled the Koenigsegg CC at the Cannes Film Festival. Buoyed by the response, his eponymous firm went on to pioneer a raft of automotive firsts, from creating hollow carbon-fibre wheels capable of speeds in excess of 450 km/h, 3D-printed turbochargers, a single-state torque converter able to handle over 1,400 pound-feet of torque, and a hybrid-drive engine producing more than 1,500 horsepower. Nowhere was that cutting-edge technology best applied than the Koenigsegg Regera.

Unveiled in concept form at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show and debuting in production form the following year, the hypercar boasted a pair of Dihedral Synchro-helix doors and an incredibly rigid carbon fibre monocoque that allowed for a removable roof, which itself could be stored in the nose of the car. Its most compelling feature, however, was its revolutionary hybrid-drive powertrain. Dubbed the “Koenigsegg Direct Drive” system, it paired a 1,084 horsepower 5-litre V-8 engine fed by a brace of 3D-printed variable turbochargers with a trio of electric motors, two of which powered each rear driveshaft, while the conventional gearbox was replaced by Koenigsegg’s “Hydracoup” torque converter—a remarkable and unique single-state drive mechanism. Allied to this was an 800-volt battery system utilising technology from the top-flight of international motor sport. The electric motors not only smoothed-out power delivery at low engine speeds, they also contributed a staggering 690 horsepower to the Regera’s already prodigious output for a cumulative total of 1,479 horsepower. The result is a machine that in 2023—a full eight years after its official launch—is still setting records, having recently reached 400 km/h in a blistering 28.81 seconds.

Production of the Regera was limited to just 80 examples, but it was a testament to the incredible technology packed into the hypercar that all had sold by the middle of 2017 despite a price tag in excess of £1.5m. An incredible level of personalisation ensures that each car is unique, including the example offered here. Finished in Moon Silver with striking blue stripes adorning the bonnet, this magnificent creation echoes the aesthetic of the first Agera, which made its debut in Geneva in 2010. The Regera was further optioned with matching Steel Blue brake callipers and clear-coated carbon Kevlar 11-spoke Dymag Spider wheels.

While its incredible performance credentials steal the headlines, Koenigsegg’s slavish attention to detail only becomes apparent when you spend time with the car. It’s then that you notice the smaller things, from the “Constellation” daytime running lights—achieved using dozens of small LEDs against a backdrop of polished carbon fibre—to the “Autoskin” hydraulic system, which allows each opening element of the car to be controlled at the touch of a button. Then there are the proximity sensors, which aren’t just in the front and rear bumpers, but also the wing mirrors and each opening section; it even has cup holders.

As well as being one of the fastest cars ever created, the Koenigsegg Regera is also among the most advanced. A technological tour de force, this landmark model is sure to enter the annals of hypercar history. This beautifully specified and sparingly used example offers a savvy collector the rare opportunity to join the limited ranks of lucky owners.
