The Model: Willys Overland Company has scored big during WWII, having won the contract to produce a little 1⁄4ton 4X4 that would be known as the Jeep. After the end of WWII, Willys capitalized on its contribution to the war by producing the “CJ” version of the Jeep. In addition to these rugged little vehicles, a line of station wagons and pickup up trucks with available four-wheel drive were created. To help build showroom traffic and build an even larger market, noted stylish Brook Stevens was contracted by Willys to create a sporty looking four-passenger tourer or phaeton Thus the Jeepster was born. Offered only in rear-wheel drive versions, the Jeepster brought in a few sales, but drove a lot more foot traffic to the dealerships so that station wagons, truck and later the AeroAce line of automobiles. Jeepster helped keep the Willy name alive.

The Car: Brooke Steven’s genius was in the design of the passenger compartment of the Jeepster, and this example shows off his contemporary leadership in styling, plus the workmanship of modern-day craftsmen who restored it. Finished in period correct shade of red with black accents along the beltline this phaeton has “fun” written all over it. The seats have been done in black pleated vinyl and the new folding black top stores away neatly when down. Under the hood, the little “GoDevil” four purrs to life at the touch of a button. The engine bay does show a light patina of used, but it is still quite presentable. From the driver’s seat, about the only amenity offered is the instrument cluster which is fresh and bright with all the instruments and gauges easily read. One of the most enjoyable collectibles from America’s immediate post-time era, this Jeepster belongs in your collection.
