Jaguar’s third series E-type was launched in 1971 as a platform for the smooth torque rich 5.3-litre V-12 engine, which had been in continuous development under the direction of Walter Hassan and Harry Mundy since the demise of the XJ13 project. Its presence in the E-Type gave the car a long-legged touring character absent from its straight six powered predecessors, complimented by a revised and more comfortable cabin, power steering and uprated brakes.

This ‘triple black’ example was originally delivered to the U.S. in 1973. Said to have been originally delivered to California, it spent its life in the Southwestern U.S. before being shipped to Europe roughly eight years ago. Its current German owner acquired the car in 2014 and has carried out plethora of upgrades and fettling to bring the car into its current condition, with invoices for the work totaling over €40,000.

It has had a complete engine rebuild by German E-Type specialist Marcus Kumpel of Frankfurt. At this time, pistons, bearings, and cylinder heads were rebuilt and the electric ignition, oil pumps, and water pumps, were replaced. Furthermore, a high torque starter motor, upgraded radiator, high performance steering gear and modern air conditioning setup, and a Motolita leather-trimmed steering wheel was also fitted. Euro-spec stainless-steel bumpers, a new soft top, new chrome wheels and whitewall tyres, a new stainless-steel exhaust system including new exhaust manifolds and complete braking system overhaul are also worthy of mention. It is presented fitted with a newer soft top and factory hard top, a modern stereo, modern seatbelts, and an upgraded central locking system. Finally, the car’s German TÜV is valid until August 2020.

It presents beautifully and would make a fantastic classic grand tourer for its next owner. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/0420.
