Since the end of the war, Jaguar’s cars had come to epitomise English Grand Touring. The generation of XK 120, 140 and 150 roadsters had made a major contribution to the marque’s sporting image through their successes in motorsport. But time had moved on and Jaguar needed to find a distinguished successor to continue its glorious history.
The Coventry firm therefore worked in the utmost secrecy on what would become the E-Type, in reference to the C-Type and D-Type models which had won the Le Mans 24 Hours race and many other international races …
Unveiled at Geneva, and not at London, to signal clearly its international ambitions, the E-Type was an immediate success and was soon elected “The most beautiful car in the world” by motoring journalists and even more by Enzo Ferrari himself.
The design of the E-Type has often been attributed to Sir William Lyons, but in fact its magical lines were penned by Malcom Sayer, an aerodynamicist who had come from the aviation industry. Fitting it over a very light tubular chassis, the English designer conceived a body with an enormously long, flat bonnet which contributed to the magnetic attraction it exercised on the public then and now.
The car we present in these pages is a roadster equipped with the 4.2l 6 cylinder, first registered in June 1965. Member of the Jaguar Club of Geneva, Jean Brandenburg acquired his roadster in 2013. As with all his cars, he enjoyed associating them with motor sport in one way or another. Although his E-Type roadster is purely for road use, he will have it equipped with a fire extinguisher and the necessary connections to receive measuring devices for regularity rallies. Shortly after becoming the owner, Jean Brandenburg will enter his E-Type in the Gstaad Classic rally organized in September 2013 by Peter Auto in collaboration with the Gstaad Automobile Club of which he was a member. Always sheltered and dry in the garage of his villa on the shores of the Leman Lake, this car is perfectly sound and shows no traces of corrosion. The paintwork redone about ten years ago has been well applied, the chrome is impeccable, the leather and carpets are also redone and the hood is new. On the mechanical side, this car seems to have always been well maintained and has kept its original engine and cylinder head. Although the car starts and drives well, it has been used very little since the summer of 2018. Fluid check, carburetion and brake bleeding service should therefore be planned before considering new summer outings on board.
