The world first glimpsed the Jaguar E-type on 15 March 1961 at the Salon International de l'Automobile de Genève to huge excitement from the world's press. Jaguar's founder, Sir William Lyons. The E-Type brought a number of innovations within reach of the masses, such as monocoque construction, independent rear suspension and all-round disc brakes. However, it was Malcolm Sayer's exquisite bodywork that set it apart from anything else on the road. With its faired-in headlamps, a long, svelte nose and central twin exhausts, there was nothing else like it. The launch price of the E-type was around £2,250, which meant it was surprisingly affordable. The E-Type is still considered by many to be one of the greatest car designs ever, with Enzo Ferrari famously describing it as "the most beautiful car in the world."

This particular matching-numbers series 1 3.8 Fixed Head Coupe is a special car indeed. Chassis 860078 was the 78th car built and rolled off the production line on 7th December 1961. Finished in its original colours of Opalescent Silver Grey with full Red leather interior, it looks absolutely stunning. This very early example was originally distributed through Ashton Preston Garages, Preston, Lancashire on 18 December 1961 and registered as “RRN 5” to be their demonstrator on 1st January 1962. Having passed through several owners in the interim, 860078 was purchased by Barrie Tickle of Purley, Surrey in 1976 who then undertook a full nut and bolt restoration. Works carried out was a bare metal re-spray in Signal Red. Then a full mechanical overhaul commenced including; complete engine rebuild. Attention then passed to the running gear where everything was checked and overhauled as required, this included; Original Moss Gearbox, Axle, Braking system, Cooling system and a full re-wire. The interior underwent a total re-trim in Red leather.

Barrie then continued to enjoy the car travelling to various shows and events until it had further cosmetic and mechanical re-fresh in the late 1990’s. Barrie continued to enjoy 860078 spending whatever was necessary to keep the car to the highest possible standard and was often seen showing her at Jaguar Drivers Club Concours d’Elegance. Barrie finally parted with her in 2015 after nearly 40 years of loving ownership. 860078 then passed to the previous owner who decided the car would benefit from being returned to its original Opalescent Silver Grey. Whilst the bare-metal re-spray took place, it also received a full mechanical overhaul, including the engine and gearbox. This thorough restoration ensures the car presents today in immaculate condition and drives superbly. This superb example is supplied complete with current V5 registration document, and substantial history file including bills, Jaguar Heritage Certificate, workshop manual and photographic history. This is a rare opportunity to own one of the first 100 examples built of what is arguably the greatest British motoring icon.
