This Mustang 350 GT re-creation was imported by the last owner as an excellent, straight and issue-free example from Southern California in April 2000. The owner was determined to build the best example of its type using the very best components available with no regard to the cost. Once here, the Mustang was repainted in Shelby GT 350 colours. We are advised that no body repairs were required. The car remained unregistered in the UK until the vendor purchased it in May 2001.

The standard to which this Mustang has been built is exemplary: there is no system or component that has not received the utmost attention to detail and, most importantly, operational compatibility with everything else on the car. The result is a car that has the stance and appearance of the original Shelby GT 350; the body and exterior have all the correct features evident on most GT 350 re-creations, but the difference here is they all actually function.

Power comes from a 302ci (5.0-litre) V8 engine with fully balanced forged crankshaft and connecting rods; GT40 cylinder heads; high-lift camshaft; high-volume oil pump and pan; and Tri-Y stainless headers and exhaust. Topping off all this is a Holley 750 Double Pumper carburettor that is fed fuel by a pressure-sensitive high-volume pump and air by a Paxton supercharger. Maximum power is estimated to be 430bhp.

The interior is a cleverly designed full-race-style cockpit that has all the systems and features of a full-blown competition car, yet it is trimmed and carpeted with custom door cards and seat trim and carpets harking back to the standard road car. Once seated and strapped in with the five-point harness, the sensation of 'wearing the car' becomes apparent and the car instantly instils a feeling of confidence, a confidence that grows the more you explore its performance. The bodyshell is stiffened and strengthened by Carter Racing upgrades, enabling the special TCP suspension components to work at their best. Gone is the usual wander and bump steer, courtesy of the TCP power rack-and-pinion steering, and the car has an outstandingly positive feeling of control at the wheel, with just the correct amount of assistance. Slowing down, the brakes give the same feedback to the driver, working well and instilling more confidence in the car. Moreover, this classic Mustang is happy in everyday driving conditions and will stay cool in heavy traffic, even tolerating being driven quite sedately.
