The original Mustang was the brainchild of Lee A Iacocca, who had risen from humble salesman to company vice president of Ford in five short years.
When Ford introduced the Mustang for the 1965 model year, its runaway success exceeded all expectations. It was the car for the moment and it sold more in its first styling phase (1965-66) than it ever would again. The Mustang became one of the most successful American cars of all time and came to epitomise 1960s motoring in the States. Within five months of its launch in April 1964 it had become the third most popular car in the USA and by 1967 the 1,500,000th Mustang was delivered.
It tended to be revised every couple of years and with every up-date the weight increased and production fell.
The big V8 versions were fine performers, and with the expertise of Caroll Shelby, its full racing potential was unleashed.
