The Model: By the time the 1964 models came to market, anyone involved in the American automotive scene that didn’t know about the successes of Ford’s Total Performance program, really wasn’t involved in the automotive scene. The development of the big-block V8 had peaked out with the introduction of the 427’s in 1963. However, there were slightly smaller versions that still packed plenty of power for other applications rather than just making laps or going a quarter-mile at a time. Police departments needed some high horsepower to catch the bad guys, so a Police Special edition of the 390 was created with a high lift cam, increased compression, cast-iron headers and few other trick earned on the way to the top. While it was developed for law enforcement, a very few Pcode engines managed to find their way under the hood of civilian’s cars. This is one of the lucky ones!

The Car: It is probably just a coincidence that a number of Ford high-performance cars come out of the southeast quadrant of the USA. This Guardsman Blue 2dr hardtop rolled off the Atlanta assembly line right around the 9th of January in early 1964, and must have found a good and loving home. Today it is fitted with Ford’s famous toploader 4speed transmission, attached to that roaring Police Special V8. With power transferred to the rear wheels via a 3.50:1 rear axle, there were few vehicles that could keep up with this Galaxie 500XL. Today the car is in excellent condition and properly appointed. Given a freshening in the late 1990’s, everything is proper for the Ford performance lover with this car. From the special high-performance 15” wheels to the “we mean business” hubcaps, this Pcode Galaxie 500XL hardtop is a force you will enjoy trying to tame.
