1963 had a considerable bearing on the future for Ford. No one could say that, in the preceding years, Ford had not taken competition seriously, but its efforts had been to some extent a backwoods operation.
1963 was the year when the new Cortina was announced to the public. This was the time when the BMC Mini was at the height of its fame and the new Cortina was intended first and foremost as an ordinary family saloon. However, the standard car was quickly followed by a GT model which produced 83 bhp and had disc brakes at the front. Clearly, Ford had rallies in mind. Later, Ford was to ask Lotus founder, Colin Chapman, to produce a sports/racing version of its new Cortina for homologation in group 2 and the Lotus Cortina was born.
