What was it about this Ford Woodie that caused the late California collector Otis Chandler to purchase it twice? In 1981, Chandler was building a collection of muscle cars, so he sold the Woodie. He then developed seller’s remorse and prevailed upon the car’s then-owner to sell it back to him. Perhaps Chandler was smitten with the classic prewar styling of Ford Design Chief Eugene Gregorie and the handsome graining of its side panels, or maybe the model’s renaissance as an iconic surf wagon made reacquiring this Woodie imperative.

Chandler originally purchased the station wagon in 1974, when he was new to collecting. Its 1970s restoration remains in good condition and features an original Roto-Matic radio, dual remote-handle spotlights, and banjo-spoke steering wheel.

The 1939 model saw the addition of hydraulic brakes to complement the confident performance of Ford’s hallmark flathead V-8 engine.
