Following the Second World War in Italy, there was a growing demand for practical yet affordable transport. The Fiat 600 was already a bestseller by 1956, when the Multipla was first launched, but the new model soon found a loyal following of its own.
Designed to fulfil the needs of larger families and commercial users, the Fiat 600 Multipla was conceived by Dante Giacosa. Giacosa’s design was truly a feat of engineering packaging. By advancing the passenger compartment over the front wheels and moving the engine to the rear, he created one of the first successful mono-space cars and was able to extract six seats from a car that was only 11 feet and 6.9 inches long!
Three versions of the Mulitpla were available, including a 4/5-seater with bench seats front and rear, which could be folded to make a bed. The 6-seater had a front bench and four individual seats that folded completely flat into the floor. Finally, a taxi version had a single seat and luggage platform in front, separate folding seats in the middle, and a bench seat in back, together with a division.
Differences from the standard saloon included, besides the bodywork, an auxiliary radiator up front, wishbone front suspension, different gear ratios, worm and roller steering, slightly larger fuel tank, and interior lamps.
