If there is one car that has come to represent the spirit of a nation, it is the Fiat 500. Born in 1957 as a replacement for the beloved 500 Topolino, the New 500 immediately became one of the symbols of mass motoring. Although it was an economical and good-looking car, it did not immediately meet with the success it had hoped for: the spartan equipment of the first versions, the absence of chrome (an almost indispensable accessory at the time) and the low performance (13 horsepower) risked the 500's disappearance soon after its introduction on the market.
The first series, known as the 'Economica' was soon revised and reintroduced by Fiat with descending side windows and a padded rear seat in place of the austere bench seat. Success was not long in coming and also thanks to Carlo Abarth's elaborations and his speed records, the 500 soon won a place in the hearts of Italians. With almost 3,000,000 units sold in almost 20 years of production, the 500 is one of Fiat's most successful cars and one of the best-known and best-loved Italian icons in the world.
The example on offer at auction was first registered in 1970 in Albenga (SV) where it was registered as a historic car, had a brief Monegasque interlude from 2009 to 2021, and then returned to Italy. It has always been kept in use and retains its black interior in perfect condition. A functioning car, it has undergone an overhaul of the braking system over the years, a slight modification of the intake to allow for more fluidity and a few extra horses. It also comes with its original page booklet.
