Beschreibung

Possibly the lowest mileage Ferrari F40 in the world, with documented provenance.

The Ferrari F40 was introduced in 1987 to mark the milestone anniversary of 40 years of Ferrari automobiles (1947-1987). The F40 was the last Ferrari automobile personally approved by Enzo Ferrari before his death in August 1988.

The fact that Ferrari had not won a Formula One championship since 1979, followed by an era dominated by Williams, Brabham and McLaren – none of whom built road cars, at that time – placed that much greater importance on the introduction of the F40. Enthusiasts were not disappointed. Ferrari described the F40 in these words: “The F40 continued the extreme philosophy cultivated by its predecessor the 288 GTO, but took it to new levels. It was built mainly from composites. Its sophisticated high-performance, twin turbo-charged running gear combined with a first class chassis gave it the kind of great dynamic prowess that was close to that of a racing car.”

Five “Evoluzione” cars were built during the development process. The F40 as it was finally announced in the middle of 1987 was described as, “raw and mean”. The Pininfarina-designed F40 looked like a race car, but was totally road legal. The F40’s construction adopted materials and construction methods from Scuderia Ferrari. The F40 was the first series production car to utilize composite materials in the body panels. The fully removable rear body section provided complete access to the mechanical components. The engine, mounted front-to-rear in the middle of the tubular frame and composite chassis, was a dry sump 3-liter 90-degree V-8 with Weber-Marelli electronic fuel injection and twin turbos producing 478 hp. In a fully-trimmed automobile weighing only 2,425 lbs. (1,100 kg), that was enough to make the Ferrari F40 the first 200 mph production road car.

Worldwide response to the F40 was unprecedented. At the height of the supercar boom of 1989 Ferrari F40s where selling for a million pounds or more. The F40 remained in production from 1987-1992, at which time 1,300 cars had been constructed in addition to the five “evoluzione” prototypes. Only 213 of these original cars were built to U.S. specifications.

This extraordinarily low mileage Ferrari F40, s/n 86620, was delivered new by Shelton Ferrari in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in January 1990. The car was driven only 735 miles (1,183 km) in two-and-a-half years by the original owner, before being offered in August 1992 by Mike Sheehan’s European Auto Sales in Costa Mesa, California. The F40 was subsequently sold to the second owner – comedian Bill Cosby –in December 1992 with just 771 miles (1,241 km) on the odometer. Mr. Cosby owned and displayed this iconic Ferrari for another 20 years, until 2012, adding only 221 miles (356 km) during his conservatorship. The F40 was purchased in October 2012 by another private collector, who had a complete major service done at 1,000 miles (1,609 km) by Ferrari Factory Certified Technician John Tirell of Independent Ferrari Specialists at a cost of $18,783.95.

The F40 was then placed on loan by the new owner in the “The Art of Ferrari “ exhibit in Galleria Ferrari at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, where it remained until July 2014. The car was shipped back to the U.S. directly from Ferrari World in July 2014, still with only 1,001 miles (1,611 km) on the odometer!

The car was delivered directly to Ferrari of Atlanta, where it was serviced, new tires were mounted, and the F40 was inspected and documented, with a Ferrari Classiche certification application completed.

As offered, this Ferrari F40 is presented with all original paint and interior in excellent condition. The recent Ferrari dealer service ensures that the car has been carefully inspected mechanically and is fully road ready for a new owner. That owner will not only benefit from this exceptional example of this important milestone Ferrari, but from the low original mileage, ownership by celebrity Ferrari enthusiast Bill Cosby, and recent exhibition at Ferrari World in Dubai. This F40 is offered with all of the original special equipment provided to the first owner, the original owner’s manual and pouch, the factory tool roll and tire pump. Additional, significant documentation is also provided with this F40, including the original “William H. Cosby Jr.” title and registration, and a letter from Ferrari World Abu Dhabi confirming exhibition of this F40 in “The Art of Ferrari”.
