Given Ferrari’s history of constructing high-performance supercars to commemorate important anniversaries, like the F40 for the 40th and F50 for the 50th, it came as little surprise when the manufacturer announced at the 2016 Ferrari Cavalcade International that it would produce 350 special edition cars in 70 different liveries for its 70th anniversary. Built in conjunction with Ferrari’s special Tailor Made department, these liveries would recall many of the most important cars and drivers from the marque’s history, and were given names such as “The Stirling,” “La Competizione,” and “The Schumacher.”

This example, finished in “The Legendary Sixteen” livery, pays homage to the 1951 Ferrari 340 America, chassis no. 0116A. That car, a gorgeous competition barchetta with coachwork by Touring, was originally delivered to Pierre Louis-Dreyfus, who was a WWII pilot and war hero as well as an avid racing driver and sportsman. He entered the barchetta into the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1951 and 1952, where he drove it himself, partnering with legendary French driver Louis Chiron. The car would later become part of Pierre Bardinon’s renowned collection, Mas du Clos, one of the greatest collections of Ferrari competition cars ever assembled.

This F12 Berlinetta 70th Anniversary Edition benefits from sparing use during the ownership of its sole and current owner. As each example of the edition was earmarked for a preferred customer, this F12 was sold to a private Ferrari collector and delivered new to Ferrari of Newport Beach in California, as demonstrated by a copy of the original window sticker.

Of the five different models that received “The Legendary Sixteen” livery no. 5, it is perhaps most appropriate on the F12 Berlinetta, as the car’s very sporting nature and front engine V-12 architecture brilliantly recalls Louis-Dreyfus’ original 340 America. In addition to the Rosso Barchetta (Barchetta Red) paint, accented inside by Heritage distressed leather and corduroy upholstery and hammertone trim, the Berlinetta is equipped with all of the F12 model’s advanced high-performance equipment, including the remarkable 731 hp V-12 engine, an electromagnetic suspension, Formula 1–derived stability control systems, a seven-speed dualclutch transaxle, and Brembo carbon ceramic brakes.

Since delivery, the Ferrari has been kept in the Los Angeles area, and at the time of cataloguing it displayed just 80 miles. It is accompanied by owner’s manuals, a car cover, and a battery charger, and is documented with Ferrari Classiche Certification and Attestation, the window sticker, and a CARFAX Vehicle History Report. As the only F12 Berlinetta finished in this historic livery, this unique 70th Anniversary Edition offers serious marque collectors a rare opportunity to acquire a top-shelf commemorative model that should find a warm welcome at club meetings and high-profile Italian car gatherings.
