Few Ferraris of the modern era have been as eagerly awaited and more joyously received than the 550 Maranello, unveiled at an event at the Nürburgring circuit in July 1996. It was the company’s first front-engine, rear-wheel-drive V-12-powered two-seater since the much-lauded 365 GTB/4 Daytona that had bowed out some 23 years earlier, and to many onlookers marked the return of Ferrari to the glory of the firm’s golden age.
In 2002 Ferrari rolled out the 550’s much-improved successor, the 575 Maranello, with upgrades that included a larger and more powerful engine, the efficient Magneti Marelli paddle-shifted F1 transmission, larger brake discs, an adaptive suspension that minimized pitch during shifting, improved aerodynamics, and a renewed interior. With 515 horsepower on tap, it sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in only 4.2 seconds, to 150 mph in 22 seconds, and could reach a top speed of 202 mph—a figure once unimaginable for a comfortable two-passenger gran turismo.
This example, finished in subtly beautiful Grigio Alloy, was originally delivered in Houston, Texas, and has been well-maintained throughout its life. Invoices on file spanning 2008–2020 demonstrate service work performed without regard for cost. Notably, the Ferrari benefitted from over $11,000 in work conducted in January 2020, with the car then displaying 6,716 miles; this included replacement of the engine timing belts and tensioner pulley assemblies, serpentine drive belts and idler pulleys, left and right front brake air ducts, as well as new fluids and filters (including rear differential fluid and filter). Consequently, it remains in excellent condition throughout, with only 6,876 actual miles on the odometer at the time of cataloguing. Accompanying are original delivery paperwork, as well as the original sets of manuals and tools.
An excellent example of one of the most significant modern Ferrari GTs, this car has been unusually well-preserved and upkept to a high standard, and still holds all of the appeal this glorious, fast and thrilling automobile held when new. It would look glorious exploring South Florida highways and country roads in the months to come.To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/mi24/.
