2005 Ferrari 575
Ferrari’s front-engine V-12 spider formula, which began with the 166 Barchetta, continued into the modern age with the 575 Superamerica. A late addition to the 575 series, the Superamerica featured a first for the Italian automaker: a 180° electronically retractable Revocromico hardtop. Billed by Ferrari as the “world’s fastest convertible,” the advertised top speed of 199 mph was impressive for any supercar.
Motor Trend was certainly impressed in its October 2005 review of the car, writing, “The Superamerica is crazily, impossibly fast. Dip into the throttle, and the Ferrari doesn’t just accelerate – it seems to suck the approaching corner right into its ravenous maw…this thing must be absolutely mind-bending on the Autobahn.”
The Superamerica’s engine is based on the most classical of all Ferrari’s layouts – the V-12. It features a 65° vee architecture with twin overhead cams per cylinder bank and four valves per cylinder, with the crankcase, cylinder heads and sump all in aluminum alloy. In finest Ferrari tradition, the V-12 also adopts a dry sump lubrication system.
In its August 2005 issue, Automobile Magazine described the elegant action of the convertible top: “In the Superamerica, the fun starts after just seven seconds, which is the time it takes the electrochromic, laminated-glass roof to fling itself back onto the deck lid (after a quick yank of the parking brake and a release of the handle on the windshield header). Not only is the fancy flip top fast-acting, but its integrated rear window, which pivots around but remains in place, acts as a wind blocker.”
The patented hardtop is constructed of a carbon fiber frame and glass, which electrically darkens at the turn of a knob. This feature provides all the advantages of both a closed coupe and a spider, and was a world’s first for a production car. Only 170 examples of the 575 Superamerica would be destined for the US during its one year of availability.
The example offered here is rarer still with the inclusion of the optional Handling GTC package and six-speed manual gearbox. Of the 559 Superamericas produced worldwide, only 43 are believed to have been ordered with the traditional six-speed manual gearbox, making this a rare and desirable Ferrari indeed. The HGTC package included 19" alloy BBS wheels with sport tires, composite ceramic Brembo brakes, red-painted brake calipers, improved engine intake tracts, a free-flow exhaust, and a sport-tuned suspension. The HGTC package transformed the spirited grand tourer into a legitimate track-ready car, evidenced by the sporting stance and stirring bark emanating from the special-tipped sport mufflers. Ferrari states that the HGTC package stiffens the spring rates by 35% in the front and 15% in the rear, while the rear sway bar is 73% stiffer. Adaptive suspension dampening of the proportional-valve shock absorbers is controlled by a switch in the cockpit, allowing “comfort” or “sport” settings for every road surface.
Included with the car is a complement of factory-issued books, accessories, and items such as a car cover, top tonneau cover, battery charger, jack, tool kit, radio code card, tire inflator, spare belts, and fuses. Still in its plastic wrapper are the leather-bound owner’s manual, warranty information, and special Superamerica folio. The limited-edition Ferrari is also Ferrari Classiche certified and accompanied by its Red Book.
