By signing, in 1972, the design of the Ferrari 365 GT / 4, which was to become the Ferrari 400, Pininfarina showed all its talent: the line is sober, elegant, timeless and perfectly reflects the high status of this luxury GT. So much, so that from the 365 GT /4 to the 412, this model had an exceptionally long career, not disappearing from the brand's catalog until 1989. Its spacious, comfortable and luxuriously finished interior is covered with leather everywhere, even on the headliner, while its 12-cylinder engine associated with General Motors' Hydramatic three-speed automatic gearbox gives it a torque and an extension never seen on a GT in its class.
Delivered new on September 15, 1983 in Hamburg, this Ferrari 400i is one of 873 units fitted with an automatic gearbox out of the 2,167 produced between 1978 and 1984. (153 units for the MY 83). Beautifully restored between 2015 and 2017, it shows just over 63,000 km on the odometer. The body has been completely repainted in its original and unusual Celeste Metallizzato color. The alignments are impeccable as are the rims also repainted and fitted with new Michelin TRX. The upholstery was completely redone at Luppi in Italy for an amount of € 7,000, scrupulously respecting the finishing details specific to the MY 1983 with smooth and pleated leather seats. The dashboard, headliner, storm doors and carpets have also been redone in the same original blu scuro leather shade (VM 3282). In the end, the combination of these two shades of blue is superb and highlights the taut lines of this 2 + 2 coupe. Matching number, this car has its Ferrari certificate but also its maintenance book, its original manuals and a copy of the first registration card. Revised in 2016, all the running gears were changed with the replacement of the shock absorbers, silentblocs, ball joints and stabilizer bars. During our test drive, we were surprised by the behavior of this GT weighing over 1.5 tons. The 310 hp are present and the automatic gearbox does not limit the pleasure of driving. As well in fast curves as on winding roads with a bumpy surface, the car remains precise, perfectly guided thanks to a power-assisted steering system returning perfectly the information of the road. Regarding the braking system, if you can easily feel the weight of the car at the wheel, you can also feel the brakes are up to task.
This car will be sold by auction by AGUTTES Auction House, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, on June the 20th, 2021.
