Beschreibung

When Ferrari’s request arrives in Pininfarina, the imperative is one and only one: develop a 2 + 2 around a fast, very fast V12 that is as elegant as few cars of the time. The Ferrari 365 GT4 2 + 2 was born from these unveiled wishes, the car was provided with a line that paved the way for a high-thickness stylistic cycle useful for realizing a few years after the 400 and 412. When it was presented at the Automobile of Paris, in 1972, it was not so difficult to fall in love with it. She was beautiful.
The design was the work of the engineer Leonardo Fioravanti, while the mighty Ferrari V12 was designed by the engineer Gioacchino Colombo. The sporty, angular and elegant sedan lines were lost in the malice of a 340 horsepower V12. But the Ferrari 365 GT4 2 + 2 also possessed classy elements, starting with the particular door handles and ending with those five-spoke alloy wheels with a star motif with the Prancing Horse in the center.
The directives that would have led to the birth of the splendid 365 GT4 2 + 2 are provided to Fioravanti by Enzo Ferrari himself. The Drake wanted a Ferrari that would use a V12 placed in front of the passenger compartment, equipped with four seats and above all a line capable of representing the only concept of elegance to the extreme. The splendid history of the 365 GT4 2 + 2 therefore begins at the Paris Motor Show in 1972 to remain the same until 1976 (but the 365 GT4 2 + 2 had to face 17 years of evolution, until 1989, becoming 400, 400i and 412 ) when the epic ended with 521 copies produced and 3 prototypes.
The 365 GT4 2 + 2 was a pure Ferrari but dressed in an evening dress. The four occupants of a very elegant passenger compartment were able to speed at very high speeds without giving up the luggage to be stored in the elegant carpet-lined luggage compartment. The wheelbase was equal to 2700 millimeters which provided excellent values of habitability, although whoever was behind did not have the same space as the two occupants placed in front. But Ferrari was comfortable to drive thanks also to the standard power steering, an element that with the self-leveling rear suspension completed the dowry of techniques never seen before on cars of the time, while some stylistic features characterized the unique lines of a car that soon became a icon.
Outside, the tires were installed on four light alloy wheels with five spokes and a star design with a central gallon. However, on request, the Borrani spoke rims could be had although they are present on very few specimens of the time due to the not appreciated adaptability with the sharp-edged lines of the 365 GT4 2 + 2

Inside, the elegance of the external details poured into a well-finished and comfortable interior. The instrument panel and central console were practically derived from those already seen on the 365 GTC / 4. The finishes included standard leather upholstery with the two rear seats which were all in all comfortable thanks to the good height of the sky and the useful space for the legs. The passenger compartment was therefore very bright thanks to the large glass surfaces.
Upon entering the Ferrari 365 GT4 2 + 2, the large central console surmounted by four circular indicators facing the driver was immediately striking. Higher instead were the four vents, also circular, for the flow of fresh or hot air from the ventilation which included the air conditioner as standard. A three-spoke steering wheel completed an old-fashioned interior with large, well-contoured seats. The stereo system, the electric windows, the wooden inserts on the dashboard and the wooden steering wheel were also standard.
Outside, the 365 GT4 2 + 2 was characterized by the retractable front light clusters that disappeared from the off in the respective rectangular seats. Then there were the aforementioned five-spoke circles while the ellipse-shaped chrome handles were very beautiful, the rear lights featuring three circular elements were very characteristic. A detail from the 365 GTB / 4 Daytona was the semi-circular notch that ran along the side of the car. Characteristic of the car was the three-pointed gallon and the taillights.
The car body made in Pininfarina in Turin was then shipped to Maranello for final assembly. The three-volume design characterized by edges and straight lines is a distinctive feature of the car that made the entire profile of the 365 GT4 2 + 2 streamlined. Thus a refined Ferrari was created with a long engine hood and four exhausts for the fumes from its powerful V12.

The entire soul of the Ferrari 365 GT4 2 + 2 resided in the kinematic mechanisms that found place under the long front engine hood. On the other hand, the unit displacement of 365.86 cubic centimeters gave the name to the elegant car that saw in that V12, with two valves per cylinder, the maximum engine expression of all times, with all due respect to the many divisions available now and then . The double pair of exhausts provided an impressive sound, as if the V12 became the only protagonist of an extraordinary roar that quickly becomes a melody.
On the Ferrari 365 GT4 2 + 2 it was possible to combine the sportiness of a single engine with the everyday life that can offer a four-seater car. The 4.4-liter V12 had a double overhead camshaft for each bank of cylinders. The lubrication was carried out with the adoption of a wet crankcase combined with six Weber 38 DCOE59 / 60 double body side carburettors useful for powering the V12. Compared to the V12 of the 365 GTC / 4 there was a double coil and an ignition distributor placed behind the drive unit. The power remained the same, 340 horsepower with 420 Nm of torque.
The transmission also remains the same on both models although an elongated shaft was used on the 365 GT4 2 + 2 thanks to the longer wheelbase of the granturismo. The final ratios and those of the single gears changed, five in total with automatic transmission. The suspensions with automatic hydraulic leveling system are also the same. With this approach, the 365 GT4 2 + 2 redefined the entire Ferrari driving experience.

Its tubular frame suspended on independent elements at the front and rear in both cases with transverse quadrilaterals is pure emotion between the curves. Although the 1,500 kilograms, empty, on the scale can present the bill during sudden changes of direction. But the 365 GT4 2 + 2 is well planted on the ground thanks also to a 1500 mm rear track, wider than the 1470 mm at the front useful data, together with the V12, to push it up to the maximum speed of 245 kilometers per hour.
The Ferrari 365 GT4 2 + 2 was conceived to provide a solution to the international demand for high-performance cars, capable of possessing very good internal habitability. However, the 365 GT4 2 + 2 never took America’s way because of legislation that at the time was very stringent with costs for the adjustment that were soon considered too high. The beautiful design of the lines traced by Pininfarina made it a car available for many years, used as a basis for the models mentioned above
The 365 GT4 2 + 2 is a coupe to be comfortable but to run, and to make it strong. Its 340 horses paw which is a pleasure, free from being tamed by any electronic devilry.
