The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’

In the late-1960’s, the ‘Daytona’, having earnt its unofficial title courtesy of the Ferrari 1-2-3 domination at the 1967 Daytona 24 Hours, was the must-have grand tourer. It features a Columbo-designed 4.4 litre V12, quad-cam, dry sump, 6 Webber carburetted engine with over 350 bhp, mated to a smooth 5-speed manual transmission, allowing the enthusiastic Ferrari owner to power from 0-60 mph is an astonishing 5.4 seconds!

The Daytona was not only admired by the automotive world, it also featured in the 1970’s Miami Vice TV series, with celebrities including Elton John owned examples making it the first Ferrari to really achieve cultural fame. But for us, our favourite piece of history associated with the Ferrari Daytona is from November 1971 when Brock Yates and Dan Gurney set a new record for cross-country vehicular travel in the USA. The pair drove a blue 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ from New York City to Redondo Beach in California in a record of 35 hours and 54 minutes, a colossal 53 minutes faster than the second-place finisher!

This Ferrari 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’

In September 1972, Ferrari completed construction of this 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’. This is one of only sixteen 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ Berlinettas to be finished in Oro Chiaro, or light gold, just as it is presented today. This European-specification, left hand drive Ferrari was also ordered new with optional air conditioning, and a Voxson radio.

It was ordered and delivered new to the Iranian Embassy in Rome, before being exported to Tehran, the capital of Iran, where it is understood to have formed part of the Shah of Iran’s sizeable car collection. Amazingly, during its time in Iran, this car was photographed alongside its successor, a red Ferrari 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer.

In the 1980’s, this car was exported from Iran and returned to Europe where it was bought by a Parisian. During the research of this car, we have found an image of this car in France, parked on the street alongside a white Ferrari Dino 246 GTS.

Having passed through Art Muller’s Southern Sports Cars of Miami, Florida, and returned to Europe once more with Jean Jacques Bailly of France, 16107 was next seen at the 1998 Brooks Gstaad auction where our very own Max Girardo was working. Copies of the original Brooks vehicle entry form, and catalogue description accompany this beautiful Ferrari, confirming the car to have been displaying 30,880 kms at the time.

In the early 2000’s, this Ferrari was bought by an Italian collector in Varese who displayed the car at the Ferrari Incontri d’Arte meeting at San Marino, Italy. The car remained in Italy until 2014, at which point it was bought by a German collector, where it joined a sizeable collection of more than 40 classic cars. During this German ownership, the car was maintained regardless of cost by a team of in-house mechanics, ensuring it was regularly serviced, with new fuel tanks and fuel lines also being fitted. A Daytona is well known for having heavy steering, but thanks to modern engineering, a tasteful addition of electric power-steering was fitted, ensuring this is a truly useable classic Ferrari.

In late 2019, this Ferrari 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ was inspected by Ferrari and awarded its Ferrari Classiche Certification, confirming it to be entirely matching numbers. This Ferrari Classiche Certification confirms this car to retain its original chassis, engine, gearbox, and body, and finished in its original colour of Oro Chiaro.

Today, this car is offered with its original owner’s manual, reproduction tool kit, history file and Ferrari Classiche Certification binder, and is ready to be enjoyed once more on the open road, just as it would have been in the 1970’s around Rome, and Tehran, made all the more comfortable by the factory-fitted optional air conditioning, and power-steering upgrade recently fitted by Official Ferrari Dealer, Eberlein Automobile.
