Perhaps no model range is more responsible for firmly thrusting Ferrari into the 21st century than the 360. Originally appearing in coupe form in 1999, the 360 featured revolutionary all-aluminum construction undertaken in partnership with Alcoa. The 3.6-liter V-8 engine was constructed entirely of light alloy, employing Nikasil-treated cylinder liners and a dry-sump lubrication system to achieve 400 horsepower and a top speed of 183 mph.
The aluminum coachwork styled by Pininfarina was a major departure from earlier designs, eschewing the classic egg-crate front grille for two small radiator inlets, though it featured rear haunch scoops that recalled the 250 LM and Dino models.
At the 2000 Geneva International Motor Show, Ferrari unveiled a spider convertible version that required minimal structural reinforcement because of the technologically advanced design and therefore weighed only 130 pounds more than the coupe.
This example is from the final year of production, and as such is one of very few provided to the US-market in 2005. Completed at Ferrari’s Maranello factory in October 2004, this 360 Spider is presented in the stunning color combination of Blu Tour de France over a sumptuous beige leather interior sporting optional power Daytona-style seats, Cavallino embossed headrests, and a matching leather upholstered roll bar. Power is directed to the rear wheels by Ferrari’s “F1” transmission—a six-speed, single clutch automated-manual system operated by paddles affixed to the steering column.
This 360 Spider’s handsome factory specifications are further enriched by the presence of red-painted brake calipers, front Challenge-style grilles, a dark blue soft-top, and a much-desired Zeuna Stärker sport exhaust system, which comes on the Challenge Stradale version.
It was delivered new to California, but by 2008 had found its home in South Florida, then indicating approximately 2,600 miles. Subsequently passing to the consignor in 2017, this blue beauty presents today with just under 10,100 miles at the time of cataloguing.
Maintenance orders on file illustrate careful ownership at regularly increasing mileage intervals, with some notable past service including a complete refresh of the delaminating interior buttons (a common issue with Ferraris of this vintage), and a new pair of catalyst ECUs. Under the consignor’s ownership the car has also benefitted from a full rebuild of the hydraulic system components that operate the convertible soft-top.
With such small production figures for the final year of the 360 Spider, this open-top Ferrari presents collectors a fantastic opportunity to secure a late-model, very well-optioned example with low mileage.
