The Ferrari 360 Modena was named after the town of Modena, the birthplace of company founder Enzo Ferrari. Creating a follow-up to the celebrated F355 couldn’t have been easy, but by using a near total clean-sheet design, engineers induced the 360 to surpass its predecessor and redefine Ferrari’s legendary road car performance even further.

Unveiled at the 1999 Geneva Auto Show, the purposeful bodywork looked radically different than every Ferrari that came before. Honed for countless hours by Pininfarina in the wind tunnel, the slippery aluminum body generated four times more downforce at speed than the F355. Underneath, an aluminum space frame replaced steel for further weight savings and greater rigidity. A 3.6-liter V-8 engine with five valves per cylinder produced 395 hp and was mated to either a six-speed manual gearbox or semiautomatic F1-derived unit with paddle controls. An active suspension system countered body roll, but provided comfort when needed. Taken together, the 360 would best its predecessor in every quantitative and dynamic measure.

The 360 received its first serious performance modifications with the introduction of the track-oriented Challenge Stradale in 2003. Inspired by the 360 Challenge cars used in Ferrari’s Challenge series and GT Endurance racing since 2001, engineers specified enhanced engine tuning, revised aerodynamics, a lower and stiffer suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes from the Enzo, a more minimal lightweight interior, and carbon-fiber racing seats. Air-conditioning was standard and one of the only compromises to broaden the appeal of the car. With 240 fewer lbs., an additional 25 hp, and more downforce, the Challenge Stradale could reach 0-60 in 4.1 seconds – four-tenths faster than a regular 360 Modena – while lapping Ferrari’s Fiorano test track 3.5 seconds faster. The 360 Challenge Stradale presented here is a virtually as-new example finished in the definitive colors for this limited-production Ferrari: Rosso Scuderia with red-black Alcantara upholstery. According to factory records, this car was also specified with the Tricolore racing stripe, Rosso Scuderia brake calipers, and a fire extinguisher, all enhancing its competition pedigree.

One of only 378 Challenge Stradales built for the North American market, it was delivered new through Ferrari North America by Ferrari of Ontario on August 31, 2004, to its first of only two private owners. It presents immaculately as one might expect with 260 original kilometers (161 miles) showing at the time of cataloguing. A rare radio-delete model, it has had major servicing performed by marque specialists, The Boston Sportscar Company in October 2015. These service receipts, along with the car’s full set of manuals, factory tool kit, and a car cover, will accompany the sale. One of Ferrari’s finest modern-day dual-purpose sports cars, this particular Challenge Stradale represents what could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire one of these rare Ferrari supercars in showroom condition.
