Debuted at the 1960 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 250 GTE was groundbreaking as Ferrari’s first 2+2 model. Despite its luxurious Pininfarina coachwork, the 250 GTE was pure Italian thoroughbred, with near-perfect weight distribution, a powerful V-12 engine, overdrive gearbox, and Dunlop disc brakes – a Ferrari road-car first. Production of the GTE spanned 1960–1963, with 954 examples built over three series.
This Series II GTE, 3739 GT, was completed in July 1962, finished in Blu Sera (Evening Blue) with grey leather upholstery. Delivered new to Luigi Chinetti Motors, the Ferrari was sold locally, with Ted Goldman of New York recorded as the first owner. The car’s history, documented by Marcel Massini and Ferrari Market Letter, picks up in the early 1970s, with subsequent owners in New England and the Midwest.
In 1988, Neil Jones of Englewood, Colorado purchased the GTE from a Nebraska dealer and embarked on a full nut-and-bolt restoration. Overseen by local specialists T’s Sunrise and 3R Automotive, the seven-year project was carried out to the highest standards and is documented by invoices and photographs. Though the car retains its matching-numbers engine, the original Pininfarina bodywork had been poorly repaired and was replaced during restoration with another Series II GTE body acquired from Joe Marchetti.
Since completion, the Ferrari has been driven sparingly – approximately 2,500 miles – and the car remains in superb condition, with its excellent panel fit and detailed engine bay attesting to the quality of the restoration. Presented in an elegant dark red with tan leather upholstery, and properly outfitted with Marchal lamps, Borrani wire wheels, and a Blaupunkt radio, this GTE is every bit the sophisticated gran turismo Ferrari envisioned.
Offered with a proper tool roll, jack, and comprehensive history file, this 250 Ferrari is truly impressive in its level of preparation, something that can be said of precious few GTEs. It appears ready for its next owner to enjoy, whether on the show field or the open road.
