Brands like Apple, Coca-Cola, Nike, Google are brands recognizable the world over. So is Ferrari and interestingly the iconic Italian luxury sports car manufacturer was named ‘The World’s Strongest Brand’ in the 2019 Brand Finance Global 500 Report.
Founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1939 out of Alfa Romeo’s race division as Auto Avio Costruzioni the company built its first car in 1940.
The “Cavallino Rampante” or ‘prancing horse’ was the symbol chosen by Ferrari and it is recognized by just about every man, woman and child on the planet!
The Ferrari road cars built in the 1940’s and early to mid-1950’s were built in very small numbers and it was not until the introduction of the 250 series cars that production numbers increased.
The 250 Series also contained some of the most special Ferraris ever built, including the Ferrari 250LM, 250 SWB, 250 California Spider and of course the 250 GTO.
Cars like the 250 GT California Spider and 250 GTO have become legends.
The 250 model range of road cars was vast and included the 250 Europa, 250 GT SWB, 250 GTE and 250 GT Lusso. One of their most successful models in period was the 250 GT Coupe by Pinin Farina. Its design was timelessly elegant.
The Ferrari 250 GT Coupé is a gentleman’s Ferrari in every sense, it was the definitive Italian grand tourer of the late fifties.
These cars were built for the individual that respected Ferrari’s racing pedigree yet wanted something more civilized and comfortable than its racing counterparts.
The Ferrari 250 PF was presented at the Milan Motor Show in 1958, the 250 GT Coupé Pininfarina was fitted with the Colombo V12 from the 250 Europa GT, with its output increased to 240bhp at 7000rpm.
Its performance was breathtaking for its time. With 0-62mph timed at 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 149mph, it outperformed its rivals, the Aston Martin DB4 and Jaguar XK.
The Ferrari Colombo Engine was a 60° petrol fueled, water cooled, carburetted V12 designed by Gioacchino Colombo, an Italian automobile engine designer from Milan, and produced in numerous iterations by Ferrari between 1947 and 1988.
Colombo had formerly designed Alfa Romeos for Enzo Ferrari.
The production of the 250 GT Coupé Pininfarina marked a turning point in the history. Not only for Ferrari, but also for Pininfarina which became, with only one subsequent exception, the sole designer of Ferrari series production cars to date.
ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE
This beautiful Series I example was delivered to the United States by Ferrari importer Chinetti Motors of New York City and sold new to a local resident named Mr. M Weinmann.
At some time during the 1960s the Ferrari passed into the hands of a Ms Tosteson, a resident of Massachusetts.
The Ferrari was sold again in 1987, the car was acquired by Mister. A. Macioce of Boston.
It returned to Italy in 1990, passing into the important private collection belonging to Mr G Prevosti, owner of some very important motor cars.
Mr Prevosti commissioned a major restoration for this Ferrari, which was fully restored over a three-year period by Carrozzeria Bottini in Italy, in the process of which it was beautifully refinished in Grigio Ferro while the interior was completely restored as well and re-trimmed in Pelle Rossa (red leather)
In 2007 the Ferrari was sold in the UK and the new owner, a good relative of us took the car to Italauto Garage in the Netherlands to be completely checked.
The fact that the Dutch gentlemen brought the car to Italauto to prepare the car on his standards gave us the certainty to purchase the Ferrari.
We know the gentlemen who gave the order for the work, we know Italauto and we know that the car had to be prepared without saving any money. The result are some impressive invoices which show for example a full engine rebuilt but more important is the result.
This Ferrari is drive wise the very best 250 we have driven.
The impressive history file show lots of technical work invoices including invoices at Italauto in the Netherlands for over 85.000,- Euro.
The Ferrari has been certified and comes with the impressive Ferrari Classiche book.
CONDITION EXTERIOR
This Ferrari is in the condition we personally like to have our personal cars. Beautiful looking and fabulous driving.
The metallic proportion in the pain is for example perfect.
The body details such as the subtle curves but also the fittings of the doors, boot and bonnet are clearly describable as excellent. The body impressively straight.
The paint on the car is beautiful. The body restoration has been some years ago which we see clearly as an advantage. If there are parts under the paint not properly prepared they should have shown signs but the body of the car is beautiful.
The paint is extremely nice. It has a very deep and beautiful shine.
The chrome parts on the car are in a wonderful condition with some minor signs of patina.
The Borrani wheels have been beautifully restored and are correctly finished with the polished aluminum rims.
CONDITION INTERIOR
The interior presents beautifully. The dark red rich leather is in a beautiful shape.
The entire interior is perfectly trimmed with the correct stitching and details.
Period correct materials have been used resulting in a beautiful interior.
The feature of any fifties Ferrari is the dash, controls and of course the timber steering wheel. All knobs, switches and meters are in perfectly working order.
To sit in this Ferrari and look around is absolutely fantastic because there are so many small details which ask for attention but off-course driving is even more special.
ENGINE BAY/UNDERNEATH
The engine bay and underpart of the Ferrari are in a very nice and correct condition. The engine bay as well as the underpart present very fresh.
One can easily recognize the proper maintenance which has been given to the car.
DRIVING EXPERIENCE
The Colombo V12 is as much a work of art as it is an engineering masterpiece.
Slip in behind the Nardi steering wheel, remember to switch on the fuel pump, turn the key, allow the fuel pumps to prime the carbs, a few pumps on the accelerator, push the key, the starter motor whirs and then the V12 bursts to life!
The Ferrari 250 PF Coupé is a true ‘gentleman’s Ferrari’ in every sense of the phrase, thanks to its elegant styling that surrounded the luxurious interior.
