"EJS" : these three mysterious letters stand for the initials of the creator of this competition car - Edwin Joseph Snusher. An automobile engineer and enthusiast, he spent two years between 1954 and 1956 designing and developing this barchetta 1100, to race competitively against Lotus, Cooper, Elva and Tojeiro.
The project took two years because Snusher wasn't prepared to use components from other sources, a more usual approach at the time. He started from scratch, with the aim of keeping the weight as low as possible. Built meticulously, the tubular steel chassis weighed just 22kg, up to just 30kg with the aluminium panels that added rigidity. The running gear was also highly original, with very special front suspension. Ingenious and efficient, it was adjustable, with a semi-elliptical spring at the top and a coil spring under tension beneath it, to produce a constant camber and caster. At the rear, Snusher opted for a De Dion axle, but with two parallel tubes in place of the more usual one. The braking system was also given special attention, with the rear drums attached to the differential and separate circuits for the front and rear. The car was given a fibreglass Mistral body, and to power it, Snusher selected a Climax engine with the five-speed gearbox from the Aston Martin DB3. Ultimately, he was more passionate about the engineering than the racing and following the 1956 season (that included a 4th place at Crystal Palace in August 1956), he put the car away, having attracted enough attention to warrant an article in The Autocar, on 28 September 1956.
Snusher sold the engine and gearbox, but the EJS remained in storage until 2001 - some 45 years without moving ! Sherwood Restorations then bought it and set about a comprehensive restoration, fitting a compliant Climax 1100 engine with a four-speed MGA gearbox, the original Aston model was no longer available. It was sold to the current owner in this form and was featured in Octane magazine in 2010.
This car is of great interest, not only for its originality and for being in such good condition for a racecar, but also as it is FIA homologated for period E in class HS4, and is therefore eligible for historic events. What's more, the car was entered to race at Goodwood in period, and although it didn't actually take part due to a mechanical problem, the fact that it was present means it is eligible for the Revival. This EJS therefore offers a passport to all the best competitions, very different to the more common Lotus Elevens and Cooper-Climaxes ! It comes with extensive documentation, FIA historic technical passport delivered by the Motor Sport Association and even the original logbook. It is an exciting and moving testament to the inventiveness and passion of its creator.
