Diamond T is best-known for building big rigs; however, it began offering a 3/4-ton Model 80 pickup in 1936 to compete with Mack, Federal, and Reo. Founded by C.A. Tilt, a shoemaker, in 1905, the company had switched from automobiles to trucks in the mid-1910s. Diamond T continued producing heavy trucks following a merger with White in 1958. White subsequently acquired Reo and merged the two companies to form Diamond Reo in 1967.

The Model 201 was built from 1938 through 1949, with an estimated 7,000 produced. Underhood is a 91-horsepower, 236.7-cubic-inch Hercules inline-six engine coupled to a Warner four-speed transmission. Lockheed four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes provide stopping power. Costing $500 more per vehicle than its “Big Three” competitors, a passenger car-styled grille and more luxurious interior appointments were used to appeal to a more upscale purchaser.

Living up to its “Cadillac of Pickup Trucks” nickname, this Diamond T has been in the possession of the current owner since May 2018. It was previously owned and restored over 19 years by Robert Bageant of Bluefield, Virginia. The frame-off restoration was the second Diamond T pickup Bageant restored to original specs; the first was featured in Mike Mueller’s book, The American Pickup Truck.

It has been restored to high-quality and authentic manner according to the consignor, who has used it sparingly and shown it only at local events while in his care. Included in the sale are records from the prior owner including receipts, invoices and correspondence related to the restoration of the truck over many years. It is important to note that the number on the chassis plate matches that which is stamped on the frame.

Finished in classic red over tan with period-correct wide whitewalls and the distinctive Diamond T grille, this pickup will certainly garner attention on the show field.
