Delahaye 135M chassis number 60139 was shipped to carrosserie Henri Chapron on the rue Aristide-Briand in Levallois-Perret on 13 January 1939. Completed on 7 March, its ravishing new body was finished to the rare ‘Grand Luxe’ specification, which included redesigned doors, hood, bumpers, and wings, as well as a luxury interior that could be detailed to the client’s express wishes. The Grand Luxe option increased the price by approximately 50% compared to a standard body. As a result, only about 40 of these opulent automobiles were built from 1937 to 1939, and less than 20 are known to survive.

The special order for chassis number 60139 was placed by Tristão Guedes de Queiroz, Second Marquess of Foz, as a gift for his wife, Mariana Brandão de Melo Magalhães, on the happy occasion of the birth of their daughter in May 1939. When first delivered to Lisbon, the car was displayed for some days at the Delahaye dealership there. A promotional photo was taken, which is included in the accompanying history file, along with its Chapron build sheet and original correspondence that documents the costly specification the body was built to, as well as the many particular demands that were made, including the special Rouge Ponceau and Gris Irizé colour combination, torpille front fenders, and semi-integrated continental spare.

The Queiroz family sold the car in the mid-1950s, and in 1971 it was purchased by Antonio Carvalho. By this time it had been repainted black and was in well-maintained driving condition. A frame-off restoration was commissioned in the 1980s, where it was returned to its original colour scheme. Carvalho sold the car to Michel Poncin in 1996, and it has resided in the Sáragga Collection for the last few years.

Today this exquisite and rare Delahaye presents beautifully and will be a welcome entry in international concours events. It is a French ‘grande routiére’ in the classic manner that will be an elegant focal point in any collection, as well as on the show field.

O Delahaye 135M com o número de chassis 60139 foi despachado para a empresa de carroçarias Henri Chapron — na rua Aristide-Briand, em Levallois-Perret — a 13 de janeiro de 1939. Os trabalhos ficaram concluídos a 7 de março, recebendo uma arrebatadora carroçaria na rara especificação ‘Grand Luxe’. Esta incluía portas, capota, para-choques e guarda-lamas de diferente desenho, bem como um luxuoso interior, que podia ser personalizado de acordo com os desejos do cliente. A opção ‘Grand Luxe’ aumentava o preço em cerca de 50% face a uma carroçaria de série. Por esse motivo, apenas cerca de 40 destes faustosos automóveis foram manufaturados, entre 1937 e 1939. Conhecem-se menos de uma vintena de exemplares que chegaram aos nossos dias.

A encomenda especial dizendo respeito ao chassis número 60139 foi feita em nome de Tristão Guedes de Queiroz, 2º. Marquês da Foz, como presente para a sua mulher, Mariana Brandão de Melo Magalhães, por ocasião do nascimento da filha de ambos, em maio de 1939. Quando chegou a Lisboa, o automóvel ficou alguns dias em exposição no stand local da Delahaye. Do acontecimento foi tirada uma foto, para publicidade e divulgação, incluída na documentação da sua história, juntamente com a ficha de fabrico da Chapron. Igualmente inclusa está a correspondência original, que regista a dispendiosa manufactura da carroçaria nesta especificação, bem como as exigências particulares efetuadas, incluíndo a combinação de cores especial vermelho Rouge Ponceau e cinza Gris Irizé, os para-choques “torpille” e a roda suplente, parcialmente integrada atrás.

A família Queiroz vendeu o Delahaye em meados dos anos 50 e, em 1971, foi adquirido por António Carvalho. Por esta altura, tinha sido pintado de preto e mantinha-se numa boa condição de utilização na estrada. Foi realizado um restauro completo, a partir do chassis, nos anos 80, recuperando as suas cores originais. Em 1996, Carvalho vendeu o automóvel a Michel Poncin e foi integrado na coleção Sáragga há alguns anos.

Atualmente, este requintado e raro Delahaye encontra-se em belíssimo estado e será bem-vindo aos concursos de elegância internacionais. É um grande estradista francês na tradição clássica do termo — grande routiére — e será um refinado protagonista não só de qualquer coleção, mas também do circuito dos concours d’elegance.
